Mechanic;
I recall a beautiful, big buck which approached from a stand of pines, into the meadow providing me with a great side shot..but he lingered behind an apple tree sapling. I observed for a while, waiting for him to move. Soon he started chucking his front feet..getting ready to turn & bolt. So I figured, "it's now or never" and I let go with a 12 ga slug from my H&R.
The buck did exactly what he had in mind..only even faster...
Going to the sapling to check for marks, I discovered a limb cut nearly through..and another one 3 ft past..grazed by the slug..about a foot to the right..
Now, this buck looked like a big 12 pointer...but I didn't get a chance for "ground shrink" to set in...
A week later, I was hunting the same spot with a buddy, and pointing at the healthy apple sapling, I said, "there's the 100 pointer I shot last week..and I shot a couple of it's points off"..
