270 Handi?

I went to walmart yesterday to get some bits and pieces for a house project and as I had a little time I made a 'short cut' through the sporting goods section.  There in the gun  rack I noticed that they had two scoped Handis  on close out for less than $300.  One was a 223 and I have a good 223 but the other was a 270.  I don't see much either good or bad about the 270 here and I have always kind of considered it as a caliber that couldn't do anything that my 30-06 or 308 couldn't do just as well.  What are your thoughts on the 270 Handi?  I have a bunch of 270 brass that I have picked up over the years, is that reason enough to get this gun. ::)  Maybe I will take a better look at this gun today and if I am lucky someone will have already bought it as I don't have time to shoot the guns I already have. >:( So much for being retired.  Seriously what has been your experience with this gun?

My wife, Patty, has a Rem 270 Mountain Rifle and she has whacked 'chucks out to 400 yards with it.  I have a Handi 7-08, and a Ruger .308.  The .308 does just about everything the other two can do.....just a little more drop.  I haven't worked much with my Handi .30-06, but I believe with a lighter pill, it'll do pretty well against the .270.  With the rifles I own, If I were you, I'd sell the .270 brass and by a Handi .45-70....now there's a rifle. ;D

Check the scope on the Wal-Mart .270.  I believe it is an unmarked generic.  I haven't heard any satisfaction reports on them.  You may be better off buying the rifle without the scope somewhere else and putting the savings into a quality scope.

I like the 270 Handi's enough that I have 3 , ya 3 , one is set to shoot 90g pills for yotes , one likes the 130g stuff and the Ultra comp will eat just about anything I feed it . Plus I a custom bolt gun in 270 .

Did I happen to say that I like the 270 round .  ;D

PS - A 270 win was the first CF rifle that I got years ago and couldn't use it for anything but killing paper .  ???

To me it appears that the 270 has lost favor with the public. All 270"s. I have a Handi 270 that is awesome and one of the best shooting rifles I have ever owned. Love it.

I have the .270 and love it!  It does everything I need and more! 

If you have a chance see what Jack O'conner has to say about the cal.   :)

I already have a 45/70 and plan to take it deer hunting the second part of the season this year.  It and the 44 mag are the only barrels that I have kept for my Handi.  Have a bunch of 405 SP loaded for it.  If this gun was another 45/70 it would be home with me already.  Then I would have one to shoot jacketed and another to shoot hard cast over Trail Boss.  I have a Marlin 1895 to shoot 300 HP in.  Yep, I am kind fond of the old war horse.

Finding and picking up some 270 brass is one of the best reasons I know to get a Handi in 270.
I have a stainless 270 with synthetic furniture and an old Japaneese Tasco 4x12x52 Euro Class scope that is a great shooter. It shoots a lot better than these old eyes are capable of shooting.
Pete told you right. The 45 70 should be a rifle that everyone should own. I think there is a law that reads, "No man shall purchase any gun until he buys a Handi 45 70."
Oh Yea.  I got a 45 70 before I got the 270. ;D ;D ;D

Does that mean that I can get a gun for all the other calibers that at present I don't have but do have empty brass for in a box in my reloading shed???  If so would you please convince my wife of this. :D :D :D

Convincing the wife is the hardest part of buying another Handi. You have to do some sneaky things sometimes. Like leaving the house with an empty gun case, pretending you are going to the range and return home with the gun case with , -------Well you probably already know some of these tricks.

The .270 win. doesn't kick quite as much as the 30-06. I've had several of both but like da 270 better..... but I don't know why. ???  It is a perfect round. A 130 gr is not big but always does the job. I can load them down to 30-30 levels or load them up to be a monster. If anything I think it's under rated and I still hear " I don't want a .270, the bullets only go to 150 gr., I want something a little bigger like an 06."  Max loads in my .270 54 gr. IMR 4350 /130 gr bullet is one  tough load.

my first handi was last year and it was the 270.  i am new to the shooting and reloading world and only actually shot it a few times with ok results with factory ammo.   i did the barrel lap, scope lap thing a few weeks ago, just need to do the trigger job now.   anyway i got some of the sierra 130gr pro hunters and loaded them last week.   had pretty much  4 out of 5 touching on the target, it was only 50yrds but with my skills i was certainly impressed and cant wait to try them at a longer range and hopefully have a report this season on how they work on deer.

I agree with you.

If you could only have one rifle to hunt with in the USA, a 270 would cover anything but a large of colony varmints.
But since you CAN have more than one rifle, the 30-06 and 223 cover what a 270 will do.
I just sold my 270, but kept my 30-06 and 22-250.

Put the 270 brass up for trade for some .224 or .308 cal bullets to shoot for fun.

The .270 is a good cartridge.  Most .270's will shoot different grain bullets to the same group at 100 yards or so...something that the .30-06 does not do (all of mine shoot 150 and 180 grains to different points of impact).  Jack O'Connor liked 'em both but opined that the .270 shot flatter while the '06 shot heavier bullets.  I'd get the .270 Handi rifle (as some have said, you can never have too many guns).

 :-[ i bought one of those walmart 270s. the scope is total junk. you could not hit a thing with it. i put a Pentax Gameseeker on it with a GameReaper one piece scope mount. Much Better,buy one without a scope and put your own on it.

  I bought my father in law's old Remington 721 in .270 for my son so he could have something that belonged to his grandfather. I never read much about about the .270 until then. After beginning to read about the round and about Jack O'Connor I've become a fan of both. If you look at the reloading manuals you'll see that what Jack said years ago is still true today. The .270 is a perfectly balanced round. If you look you'll see that the .270 will drive a heavier bullet faster than a lighter bullet in a .25-06. That doesn't really make sense except the .270 is balanced and the .25-06 is not.

It's not a matter of balance, the .277" bullet has less bearing surface than a .257", so it can be pushed faster. Same reason a 180gr .338" bullet can be pushed as fast from a 338-06 as a 150gr bullet from a 30-06, same powder capacity, both at 3000fps.  ;)
