success with the new 25 Remington
« on: October 15, 2010, 05:09:48 PM »
Last spring I had Wayne York rechamber and rebore a 22 Hornet to 25 Remington. I haven't had much luck finding an accurate load for it until last week, so I decided to take it mule deer hunting today. The load included 117 grain Hornady SST's and Reloader 15. Grouped 3 rounds into less than an inch. Five shot groups opened up to more than an inch, but still good enough.

With a doe/fawn license in my wallet, kissed my wife good-bye about 6:30 this morning, drove about 20 minutes to a place I had hunted before, and still had to wait for it to get light enough to shoot. Hunted a sagebrush/bitterbrush ridge with several steep gullies. Put the stalk on the group of  5 or 6 that included this doe. She spotted me at about 150 yards, so I dropped as flat as I could. She continued to stare at me for 2 or 3 minutes then suprisingly curiousity got the better of her. She started high-stepping toward me until she was about 70 yards away still facing me. Then she turned broadside and began bounding at a right angle to me. Soon she stopped broadside at about the same distance. By that time I had a good rest over my day pack. One round through the lungs, through and through. She ran maybe 25 yards and piled up. Gutted her out, cut her in half, and used a pack frame to pack her out the quarter mile to my pickup.

This image might give a good idea of the terrain.

You mean the old 25Rem, Remingtons answer to the 25-35 Winchester? Where do you even find cases for it?

Yes, that one. Cases are 30 Remington cases (which can be found easily at a number of reloading supply outlets on the internet) necked down to 25 caliber. The case necks are then too thick, in my opinion, so I ream their insides. Reloading dies are available, but expensive. I have had mine for nearly 30 years, bought for $15 at an obscure box store in a Wyoming small town. My father had a model 14 slide action that leaned unused in the back of closet somewhere. I found it and used it to take a couple of doe antelope in Wyoming and a doe mule deer in Nevada.

My eyes have changed such that I'd rather use a rifle with a scope now.

Yes, I am fortunate enough to live in the town in which I grew up: Lander, in the west central part of the state. Although I did live in Nevada for five years in the early 90's.

Good shooting.  Congrats!  You are lucky indeed.  I worked 3 years as a well-site geologist in the Williston Basin, Powder River Basin and the Wind River Basin.  Really loved being in Wyoming, Montana and western North Dakota.  Always wanted to get back, but life went in a different direction.

Have you ever tried 100gr. in that caliber? I came to prefer them in my .257Bob(s) and now in my custom stub barrel H&R 25-35.

Good story and nice pics !  I have a old 25-35 that is one of the few centerfires that I still have not killed with yet.    Your doe is just more proof that a well placed bullet of light caliber will still get the job done.       Congrats,     Jedman

You mean you don't need a 300 mag to kill a deer? ???

Thanks for the positive comments, all. I have carefully upped the pressure beyond what manuals indicate for the 25/35 because I think the Handi can take somewhat more pressure. The cases do not indicate high pressure. I think I'm getting velocity about 200 fps less than the 250 Savage. I haven't chonoed them yet.

Gcrank1: I have tried one 100 grain load with Nosler BT's, but it wasn't encouraging. I have some old Barnes 90 grain X-Bullets I want to try, but haven't had the time yet. I'm pretty happy with this one so far.

I have a Remington model 30S EXPRESS in 25 Remingtom and took my first two deer of my young (9 at the time I think) life.
The old 117 round nose is hard to beat for deer.
I too use 30 rem brass now but have never had to ream the neck.
Now for some fun in the off months or the summer try loading some 75gr HPs and watch the varmints go down!  ;)
To many people underestamate the little 25.

+1 that.....I suppose the new fangled HV varmint cartridges got most everybody revved, but if you had a 25-35 or 25Rem. you just kept toddlin' happily along.
Mine likes lead bullets as well as jacketed, but I have to bore clean between them and re-season the bore to each before it settles down. Not such a bad thing when going to lead, but I do hate to have to 'waste' expensive 'J' bullets.
Oh well. every shot is practice, regardless.

Cases are 30 Remington...

Ha, that would slot the 6.8 SPC into this family as the 270 Remington Short; nothing new under the sun.
