How is everybody tonight. From what i have seen this looks like a great sight.Interested in the 450 Alaskan,I have read about the winchester model 71 being converted. Is there any other rifle that can be used(new marlins)be it a lever or a bolt.No reason behind it,just like the big boys. Thanks

Good to here from someone with a  shoulder that can take it.If you could fill me in on what the conversion consisted of and if you don't mind, what did it set you back.Would by chance you know anything about  cup  pressures,if I said that right in relation to the new lever actions. This is new to me so hope I asked everything correctly.

CT Kid,
The conversion of a 336 would be very extensive. I would say machine shop time would cost way to much. I think the only leveraction' s that could be used or the winne '71 and 1886. The 1895 Marlin may also work too I don't know.
I have a 450 alaskan built on a siamese mauser. It's a great little gun. It is up for adoption if you are intrested. I have fooled around enough with it. It comes with a set of RCBS dies that are $232, and 50 or so preped brass. If your intrested!!! shipped to you $525.

Ct Kid,

There are still some 450 Alaskans in use in this area. The newer ones are built on the Browning 71. It's an awesome caliber.

My neighbor had one built for moose hunting on a new Browning 71 rifle and it's quite a rifle. I believe he had a 26" barrel installed with a new full length magazine which he loads up with over a half box of ammo and he's ready for moose season. I can get his pet load information etc when he returns from another hunt.

The few that are built are usually made by Lee Penwell, a very qualified gunsmith in Nabesna Alaska. It's his opinion that the metallurgy of the Browning is better than the old Winchester and the 71 action is capable of handling much more pressure than a Marlin action.

I watch friends go to Anchorage and buy tricked out Marlin 45-70s for two grand and have a lot less rifle in my opinion.

Try the 458 alaskan, look it up on the internet.  Use a marlin guide gun 45-70 gov. and still be able to fire the 45-70 after the conversion.

Just a thought, any conversion is alot of money
