I took a closer look at my M1917 last night and these are my observations.  On a properly assembled rifle, the firing pin is retracted to clear the bolt face when the bolt is opened and the cocking piece is retained in a recess.  The firing pin cannot protrude from the bolt face except when the bolt is completely closed; it is not even free to move forward before about 40° of rotation has been made so almost half of the lugs would be engaged before the firing pin could move forward at all.

Unless the firing pin broke free of the cocking piece, I consider it impossible for a slam fire to occur.  And that wouldn't really be a slam fire.

It does have the reputation of being "the strongest military bolt action made".   I will add to that (be it right or wrong), WHEN the bolt is closed.   ;D

George -  does the end of the firing pin on yours extend to the back face of the cocking piece?  As you aluded to, it is the shroud that keeps the firing pin from turning [and the cocking piece lower part that keeps the assembly from turning when the bolt turns].

EXACTLY!  It was the 'dirtball' that just stuck the firing pin it (too shallow) and hammered the bolt shroud to crimp in the cocking piece.  So the inevitable happened at JUST the wrong time.

The end of the firing pin is flat and it is recessed about .007" from the cocking piece.  Mine is an Eddystone.

It does have the reputation of being "the strongest military bolt action made".

I think that distinction is usually attributed to the Arisaka Type 38 (sometimes called "M38")...

Well known graduate engineer and gunsmith, Parker O. Ackley decided to find out once and for all how strong our various military actions were. Rounding up an assortment of Springfield, Mauser, Enfield P-14 and No 1 MkIII, Krag and Arisaka M38 and M99 actions, he barreled and chambered each action type for the .270 Ackley Magnum or .30-40 Ackley Improved cartridge.

Each action was then fired with a series of progressively hotter loads until the action was wrecked. The only action that survived these tests was the M38 Arisaka. The 1 3/16 inch bull barrels fitted to the M38 actions were split or blown off, but the actions remained serviceable and intact. The machined M99 Arisaka action proved to be the second strongest action of the group tested.

Thanks Dom!
I'm having lot of fun with this, but it has slowed me down a little.
Every few hours I learn something new, find something I can now do that I couldn't do the day before, engage in plesent conversation with others.
eg:
Clothes were NOT designed for lefties: buttons, snaps and zippers are all easier with the right.
Using left hand to get into right front pocked doesnt work.
Pulling pants up with one hand must humorous to watch.
One day I'm pealing the bannana normally, yesterday it was with my teeth!
Putting both socks on myself without help.
Putting the ignition key in with my right AND then turning it prart way then all the way to start it.
I still don't understand why there is so LITTLE pain in the palm of my hand, but I'm thankful for it.

CW this is a good opportunity if you shoot handguns to practice left hand shooting.....

it's a good skill to have if the other hand isn't working.  I can shoot either right or left handed.

Yup.  All points being touched seem normal.  I've overcome much of the stretching-stiffness inmy fingers and am now working on loosening up the stiffness in the back of my hand - moving my fingers all the time.
I can touch three fingers with my thumb - not yet the little pinky.  Lower/outer corner 1/3 of palm is still stiff [incules the tear].
Healing fast, but it's scary to think how limtiing it is.

Ahhhh, life is good!
Just got off the phone with DD.  He's doing his patriotic duty in providing us with materials for the one of the quinessential food groups - beer.  Enjoying an IPA now, since I'm off the antibiotics as of yesterday.

Thanks, Douglas, for the care package (1917 parts)!
The firing pin spring is at least an inch longer than my old one and the floor plate is much flatter than my 'customized' one.

Talked to the PA on tuesday - nurse took out 5 of the 6 stitches.  Two weeks till xrays.  PA said I MUST be in a hard cast to imobilize the fractures (one or more of the carples was crunched).  I said NO!  Two weeks in a CAST ?  In 3 days I'd be inthere with a 14" hacksaw blade scratching - and that ain't right.  She relinquished - I've got a comfortable wrist brace with velcro.

Only one night with any signifant pain and an OTC pill took care of that.

Thanks, again to y'all for your well wishes and prayers!

I had just started the tractor-Versitle 256 (http://www.tractordata.com/farm-tractors/001/3/3/1334-versatile-256.html) when you  called.  I was starting the auger and get ready to inload the truc.  Wish I had time to talk.  If you called a hour earlier or an hour later you could have woke me up sitting in the truck waiting for the Combine to load me.

Sounds like a clipped mainspring.  That spring is a speed lock spring....but it is the same length as issued.

That TG is straightened and narrow and the FP is set up as a straddle plate.  You are welcome to the stuff...not going to be used here.

Besides you have sent me stuff...

Tuesday we take xrays and flip coins on need for surgery.
They said about two weeks ago it MUST be in a cast.  I told them NO; as in 3 days I'd be scratching it with a 14" hacksaw blade and that just wasn't right.  SO I've had a removable wrist-splint.

Yesterday I moved my surface grinder (1275 lbs +) off the 4x6 pallet a few feet and 8" down onto the shop floor - single handedly (pun intended).  I like sliding it on steel (0.050 sheetmetal) MUCH more than putting it on pipes to roll it (it's top heavy)..

NOW I can slide it into position, hook it up adn use it!  AND now I can close the overhead door!!!!!  :o ;D

Thanks again, one and all.
The bones will take a while to fuse, but all functions and nerves are OK.
The tear is healing well, as the picture shows.  (Some of y'all will recognize how light this was compared to your experiences - it still amazes me what could have happened and didn't.)

Good to hear you are healing well but I assume you are going in for professional observation and advice before cancelling all thoughts of surgery.

This will be my last post on this topic.  Celebrate with me God's grace - the surgeon said NO SURGERY!    Now a bunch of weeks working back range and motion - two carples crunched - blew out the top of the carpal tunnel.  I don't even have an appointment scheduled in 6 months - only if there's trouble with it.
