480 Rugger Super Red Hawk
« on: October 19, 2010, 05:33:04 PM »
A dealer gave me a price, $510 out the door.  SRH-Hawk 480. How does this caliber compare to a 454 or 460? I guess their discontinuing the 480 . Will they be available components for re loaders  in the future?
IS this a caliber  that needs to die?  Thanks Sam

That sounds like a good price, NIB? I bought a new SRH in 44mag a few years(5 or so) back for $525. I thought that was an O.K. price at the time. What's the barrel length? Most of the $$ seems to be chasing the shorter barreled guns, 'Alaskan' or similar types. I was just watching a NIB Redhawk 4" in 45 Colt on Gunbroker, it went for $560 + shipping/FFL costs.  The 480 sounds like a round a guy would really want to reload for. That way you could have the range of loads from mild to wild. You could swing through GB or the rugerforum.com to get an idea of current prices.

Its between a 44 mag and 454 in power some say . You can load it mild or hot. With a 454 you can load mild or hot. With a 454 you can buy loaded ammo mild ( 45 long colt) or hot (454cal. ) . Dose Ruger still make them ? If they did stop making them demand will go thru. the roof .

Some may say it’s between the 44 mag and 454 in power but I think most will say the 480 Ruger is head & shoulders above the 454 Casull and just a tad behind the 475 Linebaugh relative to killing power.

Looking at cartridge manufacturer’s energy figures can be very misleading when comparing calibers, as that energy isn’t being transferred to the object being shot, so it’s basically meaningless.

0.452 vs 0.475 diameter is what we are comparing, so the 480 Ruger bullet will probably have both more weight and a larger meplat meaning it will probably result in much deeper penetration with a much larger wound channel.  A properly loaded 480 Ruger will usually make a complete pass through on most North American big game producing 2 big holes that result in faster bleed out than the 454 Casull.

The 454 Casull is a great cartridge in its own right, but the 480 Ruger is a step up in the “power factor”.

There should be plenty of components for reloading in the future, as the 480 Ruger is basically just a shorten 475 Linebaugh.  If they would ever quit making brass for that caliber (which I doubt will ever happen) you could just purchase 475 Linebaugh brass and trim it down to size.

At handgun ranges I think the extra 500fpe of the 454 covers any lack in meplat. In factory loads weight wise the 480 has nothing over the 454 and does give up a lot of fps/fpe. I like the idea of the 480 but it was already done better by the 475Linbaugh. Ruger built a buch of rounds with their name on them and some will last and others will die. Most of the Marlin new name rounds were for sure a bust.Hornady made out on all of them

Where's it at because if you don't buy it right now, I will!   ;)

Yes, that's a good price if it's new and even a good price if it's hardly used and with the original equipment.

Eh...the 480 has a bit on the 454 weight wise.  454 usually stops around 360-395, the 480 goes up to around 450-460.  And when you get to the 400 gr loads for the 480, it actually shoots them faster than a 454.  But that's kind of a moot point unless you're shooting at extended distances.

The 480 is a good round.  Shoots big ol'bullets at modest velocities, right into the performance zone for cast bullets.

Was out shooting mine tonight, it has a fair recoil for something thats throwing a cannon ball at the speeds it does. It shoots very well I am more than pleased by the paterns I get and my 2 buddies were impressed tonight to say the least. I have not had the chance to draw blood yet but I hope to this deer season. I payed 450 used for mine with a box of shells and dies so the price sounds fair I say buy it. Go to handgunhunt.com for some good articles.

Good luck, Stan

Eh I'm hesitant to believe Double Taps numbers; I've never met any one that can duplicate their numbers.

From what reloading data I've seen, the 454 tops out at around 1330 FPS with a 395gr bullet, while the 480 can be loaded up to closer to 1400 FPS.

But we're talking small numbers here.  The velocities are close, and like I said are a moot point unless you plan to shoot at 100+ yard distances.

2.Some primers are more powerful than others (they produce more gas at a higher temperature). Use only the primers specified herein.
3.Shotshell wads differ in their sealing ability. Use only the load combinations specified herein.
4.If you use cast bullets, their diameter, hardness, lubrication, and crimp will affect the ballistics.
5.The shotshell loads in this booklet are for use with LEAD SHOT ONLY!
6.Use only the brands of powder and components shown in our tables. Do not substitute other types.
7.Discharging firearms in poorly ventilated areas, cleaning firearms, or handling ammunition may result in exposure to lead, a substance known to cause birth defects, reproductive harm, and other serious physical injury. CDNN has 480 super red hawk 9 1/2 inch barrels less than 500.00 hundred dollars shipped and black hawk anniversary 44 Mag  less than 400.00 hundred.   I dont know if I will buy 480, but it is a great price.  44 Mag does not bother me. 480 sounds like a monster.  Thanks for your post, and I hope anybody wants one gets one at this price.

Thanks,

Sam

Quote:  CDNN has 480 super red hawk 9 1/2 inch barrels less than 500.00 hundred dollars shipped

Typically, when someone says "shipped", it means that shipping is included in the price, hence "free shipping".  ???

there's a few cast bullets for the 454 with as large or larger a meplat as you will find for the .480/.475.  the 454 can very very easily be loaded to above 1400 fps for the 454.  go larger than 400 in the 480 and you limit case capacity pretty severely.  it's a great round but is not the same.  especially if you ever choose to shoot jacketed bullets.  even if you get into the linebaugh seminars, with the exception of one outlyer in the results, there's in reality never been much difference in the penetration b/w the 454 and 475.  you'll see that no round out of the 480 has ever come within several inches of either.  there's alot of steam behind the big and slow parade these days and there's merit to it, but you're not comparing big and slow to small and fast, you're comparing big and slow to almost as big and much faster.  as long as the bullets hold together then that's had the advantage imhe.  once you've taken a rhino stem to stern and taken elephants with a cartridge on frontal brain shots then more penetration is just a moot point.  that said, the deepest penetrating expanding round tested in the linebaugh seminars was from a 454.  came close to 40".  either will kill anything you choose to shoot that's for sure but one will do it with a significantly better trajectory.  i don't compensate at all on deer at 125 yards or so.  still spot on.
a gun owner that votes dem is an oxymoron with the emphasis on moron.

While I certainly can't disagree with MK454's comments...well done BTW...I bought a 480 because it was kinda different from anything else I own and the vast majority of hunting I'll do with it will be at less than 75 yards.  I still find it difficult to hunt with a scoped handgun...I had a Mag-Na-Port Stalker built several years ago that I sold cause I just couldn't wrap my head around shooting a handgun with a scope...no fault of the gun, wish I'd kept it...that's me .  So I got to thinking a 400gr / 475 cal bullet at  12-1300fps would take care of alot of my needs (whatever those are  :D).

I agree with MK454 and suggest that if a fella is going to keep all of his shots within 50-75 yards...I don't see a lot of difference though 454 ammo is much more available for sure.  Beyond that...the 454 could be just the ticket!!
