duck gun
« on: October 20, 2010, 03:35:40 AM »
I'm thinking about trying my hand at duck hunting since  I already have the camo hip waders and even a duck boat I inhereted ( it's a old wooden one last time I was in it in the water was about 30 years ago but it's been sittting in a garage since then so not weathered) The problem I have is I don't have a shotgun for the job. I have a winchester 101 feild special (pre-83) 2 3/4 chamber with a full on top and a mod on bottom. The problem I have is it was another inhereted item and it's in excellent shape, to me it way to nice of a gun and sentamentle to me to take out and have it get roughed up so to speak. My other shotgun is a fn slp mark1 that I use for three gun competitions. If you don't know the model it's the same gun as a winchester sx2 or browning gold. It has a 22" rifle sight cantalever turkey barrel and a full length magtube that holds 8+1 ( I know it has to be plugged I can easily make one to bring it to hold only 3) Here's kinda my dillema should I buy a bird barrel for the my FN ($300) and have a good automatic? Or spend $200-300 for a 870 and have a good pump? Or just plug the FN and try duck hunting with a rifle sighted turkey barrel? Which will probly get some looks and the wardens asking me why I'm out duck hunting with fixed full length Magisine tube.

You want a BPS, but of the choices listed, you want an 870.  You absolutely do not want to waterfowl with a barrel shorter than 26"

Pumps are good until the temp gets down to where you have on alot of clothes and working the pump is slowed down by them . You don't want a gun that puts the hulls under your feet either IMHO.

Thanks for the replys folks, I guess I'm in the market for a used 870  I would take a BPS if I could find one in the right price range so to speak and I already have all the chokes I'd ever need in a 870 or rem. for that matter.

The more you'll use it, the more you'll fall in love with it.

After using a 870 Wingmaster or older magnum even the 870 Express feels lacking in handeling qualities and livelyness .

If feels that way because it is.

I used to recommend to people who wanted to become serious hardcore duck hunters that they buy the BPS first, and the 870 second.  If they wouldn't get one of those two, they should borrow a gun.

Today I still have BPS first, but now for the more budget hunter I recommend the Nova.  It's ugly to my eye, but it is a similar, yet better made product than the modern 870 express.

Oh, and lest you think I don't know what I'm talking about, I was carrying an 870 around the woods... uh... 4 hours ago.

:)  I have had the same problem myself. Started hunting ducks again last year after 15 year gap. I am shooting A Tristar Viper G2 Auto 28" barrel 3 inch tubes plus 3 choke tubes. I have 800 rounds through it with zero problems. Great for the $ 370.00 spent, but it only weighs 6.8 pounds and three incher's get your attention. So I just bought a Benelli Super Nova with a 26" tube.  I have had 2 Nova's and they were ok but the Super Nova is a much better gun. I also have a BPS  and love it, buts it's got nice wood so I use it on Upland birds. Both are great guns as is the 870 express (doesn't fit me) any of these would make a great waterfowl gun. Jess

well put!

I have a Berretta AL391 that has a synthetic stock and I LOVE IT!!!

i have shot everything from the cheapest and lightest skeet/trap loads i could find all the way up to 3.5" goose and turkey loads.

I have never had a hang up or a glitch with the gun.

The mud and ice doesn't.  But if you must, I've had better luck with an Benelli than anything else.

I shot a super black egale the first trip and the grit and gumbo mud of Manatoba stopped it several days . Used a pressure washer to get euip. clean including gun. Next 4 trips used a Winchester super X 2 and hunted same areas and fields and marshes . Not one failure . Plus the gas system is soft shooting.
