Some years ago, my wife and I went to Yellowstone. I love to fly fish, so I fished some rivers in the area and then decided to go north to Ennis on highway 287. Small town, great place to get more fly fishing information. We heard about a small historical town just west of there, also on highway 287 called Virginia City. It's an old mining town. There is also another little town just up the road from there, but I cannot remember the name. Anyway, if anyone wants to see these old towns, it is a must see. When we saw them, some of the folks in the area were trying very hard to keep them as intact as they could. You could look through the store front windows and see the old shoes, still in their box's and old clothes, the high neck shirts on display in the old glass counters. I have no idea if this town is still there? We just know that we were blown away by the fact that this town had been restored back in the 1930's by a couple who felt that the old West should be preserved so that future generations would be able to see how it was at that time. They spent their entire fortune trying to keep this town original.
If your ever up that way, take a stop. It still had an original working saloon when we were there in 2001? It is truly a step back in time.
