I want one too!  I've really got the bug.  I passed on a few used 454's for $550 because I want the 480.

What do I think of the price??  Honestly??.....
I think it's a HECK of a lot of money for ANY standard production revolver!  It's unreal how the prices of guns have up.  It wasn't but a few years ago one could find a standard Ruger Blackhawk for around $329....now they're almost $500.  It's crazy!!!

Now, what do I think of the price you found as compared to other 480 Ruger Super Redhawks??  It's a fair price...not extremely low though considering it's used.  The Cabela's near me has a new one for $689 or $699.

I'll probably give in eventually too and buy one.  The crazy price is the only thing holding me back....but that's bound to go up too.

If the shop you're dealing with is worth going back and buying more guns and stuff from in the future, you should be able to talk them down a few bucks, at least to make up for the tax.....especially being that it's a used gun.  The shop I buy from usually cuts back like that for me.
Good luck!

It's in the ballpark.  When Bud's Guns had them in stock they were selling for around $650.00 new.  You might be able to haggle them down some.

There are a couple on gunbroker in that price range but no one is bidding on them.  There was one there a couple days ago and is probably still there for a buy it now price of around $550 but with shipping & FFL fee's you would be looking at over $600.00.  That one had like a 10" barrel on it.

If you keep looking you might be able to find one for $550 out the door - that would be what I'd pay if I was in the market.

I was looking at the one on Gunbroker too.  The trouble is the shipping price and FFL fees.  The shipping is $30 to $35 and the lowest price I can find near me for an FFL transfer is $50.  So I'm looking at one for $685 or so if I buy on Gunbroker.  At that price I can probably get Cabela's to sell me theirs for the same price.

Hey BW

$649 for the gun and $32 each for the ammo.  Not the cheapest price but available.

$649 out the door with tax etc isn't that bad.  Well, actually, it's terrible....a standard Ruger six shooter just shouldn't cost that much unless it's some kind of crazy custom revolver!  But being that guns are ridiculously priced these days, that's about as good or a price as one can find.  It was a good find.  Good luck with it. I'm sure it'll be a lot of fun.

I keep telling myself that it's crazy to buy a gun for over $500.  But these days, anything under that much doesn't get you much if anything at all.
The same goes with cars.  My old motto always has been that I absolutely refuse to buy a vehicle for over $25000.  HUH!  Find anything that you can fit more than 3.5 people in for less than that and that's worth a darn and I'll eat my hat (if I had one).

LOL Black!!  This shop hadda heck of alot of the old nifty stuff like several different engraved and non-engraved ColtSAA's and quite a few oldies but goodies like several Walthers that had numbers instead of letters after the walther banner.  There was also a new SW 36 in 38sp that was all case hardend with a grip safety that sorely tempted me...but not for $720.  Also, a colt 2000 double action in 9mm that looked unfired.  Just a nice old gunshop.

Drdougrx,

You should look at getting the Lee bullet mold for the 480 Ruger/475 Linebaugh.    Casting bullets for the new behemoth may help defry your ammo expenditures.  I really like my cast bullets, they do one hell of a job on Florida hellporkers, especially my .515 caliber 12 gauge slugs.  I still us emy 44 mag sometimes, but my slugster really puts em down.

Hey Swamp!

I've given up casting a long time ago (early 90's)......I had 2 pots, all kinds of molds and ... idonno ...  300-400 1 lb ingots that I cast so that the lead would be clean.  I'm not overly worried about buying cast boolits....I know it's more expensive...but... I never found casting to be much fun....right up there with trimm'n brass for me.....

Sold my Ruger 480, bad move on my part. I love the round, it is probably one of the best handgun rounds out there, and the most over looked by handgun hunters in my opinion.. I had a custom 475 Linebaugh built by Gary Reeder last year on a Super Blackhawk frame, I love shooing it. The cool thing I can use the 480 Ruger loads for a lot of game, and move up to the 475 Linebaugh if I feel the need. I like the 475 Linebaugh so much I am having Gary Reeder send me a Redhawk 5 shot in 475 Linebaugh now. It is called the Mastodon, it is a fully custom Redhawk from the grip frame to the front sight and barrel. It is a 6 inch long barre, and will make a great partner for my 475 Linebaugh Super Blackhawk.

Way to go with the 480 Ruger drdougrx  ;D

Thanks Red!  I really like this gun!  Can't wait to give a big hog a "run" .... or do I mean Brick Wall for his money.  Anyway...shooting some 325gr hornadys to get to know this new friend and then I'll buy some 370 or 400gr hard cast.

Temmi...I put Hogue Tamers on and it has really made my shooting life more pleasant.  I use them on my SW29s as well....really helps me control my mountain gun with 300gr wfngc cast bullets at 1150!!!!

And by the way it is four and a half years old and service is all the expense I have been out.

I've been called worse than that Nomo!!!!  I love this cartridge....I don't know why....I just do.  I'm not real crazy over the super redhawk though...nothing at all wrong with it...but...I've got this itch for Garry Reeder Arizona Classic in 480ruger that I think will happen at the expense of the Redhawk.

Wow, that is very nice!

Like Redhawk said, I also believe the 480 is an overlooked round. I believe Ruger is at fault for much of that. They should have offeredmore than 1 load, should have offered a heavier bullet & a heavy cast, although Hornady involvement would make that hard.

I believe this round has more appeal to heavy cast shooters, who usually prefer SA revolvers. I believe that if
they had offered the other loads plus a 5 shot Bisley, they would have a very successful round, but I am not a marketing man for Ruger, just an opinion.

You are going to love that 480 & you won't have to wreck your wrists to make it an outstanding game gun. I run mine around 1100 fps with 370 gr slugs & it shoots through everything including 2 bull moose.

Thanks sixshot!!  I'm very much enjoying your posts, photos and stories.  I'm looking for a bisley to have converted to 480R rather than 475 (after thinking about the comments in another thread) as we speak....that's as soon as I get my 41mag BH back from my smith who is converting IT to a bisley.....

So many projects...so little money!!!!!!   ;)

Sixshot; that is a beautiful piece!  If you don't mind me asking, what did that cost you (roughly) all total; for the original gun and custom work?
I dream of having a nice single action like that but the cost of one will probably always keep it a dream and not a reality.
