      Hi  Ben,

I bought a bag of 25 of those at a gun show recently.  I want to try them in a couple of fully rifled slug guns I have in 12 ga.  Just need  a little free time to do it !   This being retired and not having enough time to play is BS.  Ill let you know when I have some range reports.  Looks like a good year for deer here in Ohio,   Best of Luck Hunting !    Jed

Save your money and get the Lyman 525 mold they are alot more accurate. I tried the Lees and couldn't get a group better than 2' at 50yds. The next batch I knurled the slugs by rolling them on a file. The groups where better at 6" to 8" at 50yds. The Lymans will group one ragged hole at 50!

    eye shot,

Oooohhhh Weeee  A 2 foot group at 50 yards ?  I can throw them by hand that good, the rifling must not be doing much with the LEE slugs.

I had the impression that they were meant to be used in smoothbores, I have them down to 6" groups at 50 Yds, nothing spectacular, but I''m going to give em a go aain next spring.............steg

Steg and Ohiobenito,

+1 on the Lyman slugs.  The Lee slugs are a bit undersized for a rifled bore. I had mediocre accuracy from Lee slugs, I just sent my mold to a guy who wants to try them.  I recommend that you try to Lyman slugs.  They are more accurate and have more downrange punch.  A hardcast and water quenched Lyman slug will harvest game up to elk and moose.

how do the lymans work in a smoothbore?  Thought about getting one of the molds and doing some wheelweight slugs for swamp hogs.

I cant speak for Lyman sabot slugs in a smoothbore.  They can be used in a smoothbore, but I have serious doubts about stabilization.  The best barrel for Lyman sabot slug is a rifled bore.  You could try 69 caliber round balls in a smoothbore -- I have heard they are devastating on anything they hit (ie, about 500 grains of lead).  BPI has a  technical brochure on RB slugs.  I can scan it and send to you via email.   For a smoothbore, I suggest a RB over the Lyman sabot slug -- molds are cheaper, too.  The .69 caliber RB mold from Lee is about $25.00 shipped.    My preferred bacon bomb alloy is three pounds of wheelweights to 4 ounces of linotype (added tin for flow, antimony for hardness), water-quenched.

The hardest hit pig from my allow and slugs went nine feet, and that was only because the slug knocked him into the brush while blowing out the offside shoulder.  The RB slug should yield even more devastating results.

If you have a choke tube you might try a new Carlyle choke tube. I have an old style Carlyle Sniper rifled choke and it was only good for 2 good tight shots and the third was huntable, after that no hope. Thier new tubes are choked tighter. I have one but havent tried it yet. They were reported to shoot consistantly tighter with sabo and plain slugs. Mine is a 20 ga but the one that I read about was a 12 ga. Enough tihghter in my 20 ga you can tell by sticking your finger in the tube. ear

Since you folks are a lot more knowledgeable about slugs than i am.....

what about those slugs that look like a giant wadcutter pellet?

(also do you know what they are called i would like to try some...)

it seems that they would self stabilize like pellets?

thanks

Interesting, what kind of accuracy is obtainable with them?

Can i load my own?

do i have to cast them also?

how difficult is this?

thanks
