Denali Hwy Caribou
« on: October 23, 2010, 10:08:19 AM »
Took a quick day trip to the denali highway for some caribou hunting.  My buddy had a tier II permit and a proxy so we could get two caribou.   We found a pretty good sized herd early thursday morning and after about a 1.5-2 mile stalk we got a small bull and a cow.  Those critters can really cover some ground.  They might not look like they are moving very fast but they cover a lot of distance.  Had a pretty rough mile pack back with 120 pounds of meat on my frame.  Weather was great, country was gorgeous and great company.

Very Nice! Congratulations. I love caribou hunting. Wish our herd would rebound soon here in the Nushagak. You are right. I've tried to out-flank "slow walking" caribou by running when out of sight and I've rarely succeeded, even when I was young and in good shape. They are amazing animals and I love to watch them. Eating them is even better. Thanks for sharing.

Bear:  Good Going, The cow will be mighty fine eating.  This time of year watch out for the bull's meat, it still could be pretty rank at this time.  Rutt was not that far back.

Learned a long time ago never try and chase them.  Find a migration route and let them come to you.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Luckily the meat was excellent for both animals.  The cow was definately better of the two but the bull wasn't rutty at all.   I'm going back up next week with another buddy.  We are taking the wheelers so won't have to pack or chase this time.  Hopefully there will be a few bears or wolves roaming about due to all the bou carcasses from the teir II hunt.  I guess they have killed a bundle of them off the denali HWY.
