Bllackhorn 209 Questions...
« on: October 24, 2010, 03:20:33 PM »
For the people that use Blackhorn 209, what steps do you do after you pull the trigger?

Had a guy tell me to use Hoppes #9 between every other shot. He runs two patches with hoppes #9 and the third is a dry patch.

Just want to do things right.

Thanks!

I have sot my encore 10 times without swabbing.  That is part of the good part of Blackhorn.  I use windex when I swab nd it cleans up well. When I get home I clean with g96 and a 50 caliber bore snake.  Once or twice through the barrel and it is clean and oiled.  I store them without the breech plug in.  I also use wondwx to clean the breech plug.

It depends.

If I'm just plinking, then nothing.  I shoot until I'm ready to go home then clean the gun.

If I'm working up a load, I general swab between shots as I'll be shooting from a clean barrel when in the woods.

That's the nice thing about 209, you can shoot a heck of a lot and not run into fouling issues.  It cleans up easily too.

With blackhorn 209 over time you will develop a routine that works for you accuracy wise.  Many people like to at least work on 2-3 shot groups without swabbing just to know what their gun will do if needed while hunting.   I'm use to swabbing between shots because of all the Triple seven I've used but right now I'm using 209 in a 32 cal. and really appreciate how forgiving it is.   BT

If i am going to be shooting a lot,  20+ rounds, i will bring a #32 drill bit and clean the flash channel after about 10 shots. Keeps the plug running clean and performing well.

Swabbing between shots IMO is a waste of time. Ive shot 60 shots through my rifle without ever having it tighten up.

I dont swab at all between shots, but after about 10-12 shots I clean BP.  When home after shooting I then use #9 and clean BP again.

I treat BH 209 just like any other powder. I already know what load my rifle likes, so i take the rifle to the range, shoot 2 fouling shots, and then shoot 2 groups of 3 shots to check the zero on the scope. When satisfied, i am ready to hunt. At the end of the season, i clean the bore. I have shot up to 35 shots or so without cleaning between shots. Every shot was easy to load and the rifle gouped about 2.5" at 100 yards.
I DO NOT clean between shots, it is not needed with BH 209. Actually, i think that it is counterproductive to do so.
I hunt with the bore fouled, this gives me predictable results.
