In Saudi Arabia and taliban-controlled Afghanistan, they'd surely call it justice... that is, after all, where they cut off hands for stealing, and cut off heads for who knows what.

In the past few years there have been several electrocutions of punks trying to steal copper. Cleansing the gene pool at least. POWDERMAN.

There certainly is some level of poetic justice here.  Copper thieves are just terrible.  A country is nothing without it's infrastructure, and people going out and deliberately destroying that infrastructure for a few quick bucks is just aggravating to put it mildly.  In a lot of developing nations one of the main hold-ups in getting internet spread out to various parts of the country is that as quick as they could lay the wire, thieves were digging it back up (particularly problematic for communication lines is there is little to no voltage going across those wires).

What's worse is that even in recent times with companies switching to fiber-optic cable, these idiots are still digging that up and dragging it to the metal buyers - not knowing that dug up fiber optic cable is virtually worthless.

In these days and times it may be that they were trying to survive----I dunno.
There are two small children left without family----I pray for them,

I do feel sorry for the children, not the parents. Most of those thefts locally are to support drug habits. One church saved for years for a central AC system and finally got it,  spending thousands of $. Low lifes ripped off their unit for about $60 worth of copper. Same thing happened to our local vet, over 110 deg that day, and the punks stole it that night, next morning the animals left there were in real bad shape, several died. I have ZERO tolerance for punks. POWDERMAN.

 you are so right that many of the people doing this are crackheads.  a guy i  served with lives in alabama and his line of work involves wiring buildings.  he has a big problem with criminals coming in and stealing the wire before it gets heated up.   
   the sad reality is that those kids are probably better off now.

Yeah.  Similar situation happened here a few years back.  Locally a particular elderly guy had fallen on hard times.  One of the local churches had been taking up offerings to give to the man.  It had gotten to a few thousand dollars.  A group of local teens broke into his house and beat him to death looking for the money.  They didn't know that the church hand't handed over the funds yet.

Sometimes they get their due though.  Some idiots a good 7-8 years ago for some stupid reason decided that they were going to steal a riding lawnmower from Wal-mart - you have to understand that the town where I work is small, and butts up to a lot of tiny rural areas that you can quickly get away to.  Anyways, these bozos decided that one would sit on the lawnmower and drive it while the other towed him down the road using an EXTENSION CORD.  After about a mile they crashed (as if you couldn't see that coming . . .) and the guy on the lawnmower broke his neck.

One man was electrocuted and his female partner was severely burned after the couple attempted to steal copper wire from a vacant property in Southern California, police said.

"I believe they thought the power was off," said Lt. Keith Hupp of the South Gate Police Department.

"It was a pretty ugly scene," he added.

A witness said he rushed to the site after hearing an explosion.

"I just heard a loud explosion and a lady screaming, just screaming like crazy, so I walked over there and I seen her like half burned, and she was just like crying, asking for help for her husband," Jose Carrasco told CNN affiliate KABC.

Police said they believe they found the couple's children -- ages 3 and 6 -- waiting in a truck near the vacant property when they arrived at the scene Saturday afternoon.

The woman was being treated for severe burn injuries and listed in critical condition Saturday night, Hupp said, and the children were in the custody of protective services.

Police have not released the names of the victims pending notification of next of kin.

My company had underground cable stolen while in use and loss the use of a lot of traffic lights and other highway safety functions. After the problem was found they rushed to get it repaired before anyone got hurt.
The following week it was taken again. Hard to guard every manhole.
A small restaurant was opened in my town and was convenient for me and the guys to eat lunch while we were working on some equipment that was down for a few weeks.
Went in to eat about noon one day and all the doors were open with fans going, some had stolen the A/C. He had it replaced and few days later, the doors were open and the fans going, stolen again. What thieves  do can ruin a man or cause someone to get badly hurt.
My guess, the wire thieves were illegals. Here and there.

  Although I do feel sympathy for the children and even their thieving folks. Stealing is unquestionably wrong, but this does seem a strong penalty.. My heart aches for the children...

Too bad they were allowed to breed before they cleaned the world of themslves. Let's pray thier children did not get thier bad part of thier DNA.

Lets see AC units stolen , Water lines stolen , plumbing fixtures stolen , line set stolen out of homes and off trucks and other items stolen. All this so far this year . WE LOSE ALOT LIKE THIS , SOME STEAL BECAUSE THEY ARE HUNGRY , they drive a truck to the site of the theft so why not drive to one of the free kitchens to eat ? Some need drug money and some just cause they think they can get away with it.
 Shame for the kids .
 Gene pool ? It needs cleaning some one tinkled in it .
