Read up on
Three-fifths compromise, reached during the Philadelphia Convention of 1787 - this is where they decided that, for enumeration purposes,
three-fifths of the population of slaves would be counted as regular white people, for purpose of taxes & apportioning representation in the house. Article 1, Section 2, Paragraph 3 of the Constitution reflects that compromise.
Read up on the
Connecticut Compromise, which got us our two-house national legislatures. That, too, came out of the Philadelphia Convention. More compromise between large/small states.

Missouri Compromise, where by
compromise Missouri & Maine got in, one slave and one free, and decisions made by
compromise on how to deal w/slavery in western & northern mid-west territories, and put off the Civil War for another forty years.
Lots of
compromises in the formation of this country; to say otherwise demonstrates ignorance on the issues of that time. Lots of good resources out there for you to bone up on.
