Is anyone else playing with a 6-284???
« on: October 26, 2010, 02:35:54 PM »
I picked up a 3 barrel Savage a while back just for the 6-284 barrel, had no idea what I was getting into. The 6-284 barrel was short chambered so I bought a reamer and finished chambering it. I found out that it had also been rechambered from a 6 BR chamber. The fireing pin spring was loose, so I had to work on the bolt. I haven`t got to play with it much and only with AA Mag Pro powder and CCI BR-2 primers, but can live with what I`ve got if I can`t get it better. I have a 5-shot group at 100 yrds. at .688 and a 3-shot at .460. The problem is that I shot the 5-shot group with the bullets jamed into the rifleings hard enough to pull the bullets if I tried to unload the gun. The 3-shot group was only jamed into the rifleings about .010 so I can unload them. I`m going to back them off another .005 and try that. I did try backing them up to abt .002 off the rifleings and the group size really increased. The best thing about it is that I shooting 105 gr Bergers with a 532 BC. at around 3,000 fps, guess as I haven`t cronoed them yet. Anyone have data on this round to share???

I did one about 15yrs ago with 105gr (45gr to 48gr/H-4831).  After chrono the loads since barrel was a staight blank I had it rechamber to a 6br, didn't need at that case capacity of the 284.  The 6br uses  depending on which 105gr bullet 29 to 31gr of powder mid 2900fps best accuracy.  You might want to move up to the 115gr DTAC they like around 3200 max fps.

Don't get me wrong I like the 284 case I'd also shot a 1/14 twist barrel for the 68gr bullets in a 6x284 and I also did a 6.5x284 now I'm shooting a 27" long barrel 284.

I`ll give the 4831 a try. I want the rifle for a long range coyote gun. I did get it back to 300 yrds. today and it was looking real good there.

I had a 25-284 for a short while.  More bang than I needed.  The rifle was sweet, a fully tricked out 700. Shooting a 250AI now.
