This fall I've been fortunate enough to take two big game animals with the LE ammo 45/70 in particular.

August found a nice Black Bear in my sights at roughly 60 yds. This 270 # sow was hit through the shoulders resulting in a compleate pass through, and traveled about thirty yds. give or take.

October found a 5X4 bull (3-4 years old) in a similar situation. The bull took the round in the shoulder, ruining a lung and stopping after hitting a rib on the off side. He walked a leisurely ten yards stopped and fell over. This shot was roughly 75yds.

I was a bit suprised that the bullet did not exit, though I'm not complaining about the short trail. Is this pretty normal performance for the LE ammo? The freezer can't argue with the effectivness, I was just expecting a bit more penetration.

The old 1895 in 45/70 certainly got some attention in camp this year. Killed as well as that upstart 30-06 round everybody raves about, I'm still not sure if that one will make it.

NRA's Nov. 2010 American Rifleman has an article on the subject entitled "Expanding Bullets:  How They Really Work", which suggests that expanding bullets, and it would be my opinion that LE ammunition is hollow pointed and expands explosively imparting most of its energy inside, lack the "umph" to punch through the tough, "elastic", off side hide due to that expansion and its terminal velocity after traveling through to that hide.

A while back Markc posted a photo of a coyote kill and the recovered bullet. I was amazed that the le Hornady he shot the coyote with passed thru with little expansion. Not the pass thru , but the little expansion. the bullet was disfigured but it did not look like it had expanded ar all.

My experience with 35 rem Le ammo has been good with expansion and good stops. On white tail and Axis.
