I just picked up a new preaccutrigger 116 in 30/06 and I am having some problems.  So far I have had one group under 1.5" with most being 2.5"-3" with 150's and 180's, all hand loads.  I have tried various powders and charges and seating depths.  The barrel and tang are floated, trigger has been worked down.  The barrel is very crooked in the channel, very.  I am thinking I need to bed the action to help with contact and to help square everything.  Anyone have and success stories from bedding a Savage 110/116 action?  Scope, rings, base are all solid, nothing is wrong there.


This thing really shoots like crap right now.

I bedded the action of my 110CL about 40 years ago.  Do not recall if I had any accuracy issue, it was just the thing to do.  The rifle has been a real good shooter and deer getter.  A former co-worker had the samething in -06 and I was disappointed that he sold it without letting know it was for sale.

I have had enough confidence to neck shoot 3 or 4 bucks out to 100 yards because the vegetation did not allow a clear shot otherwise.  Blacktails love hanging tight in brush fields.

I've got a 116 and a 111 both shoot sub moa..I have replaced the triggers with after market Rifle Basix, and shoot factory ammo.. my 116, 7mag likes Winchester ballistic silver tip...150 gr. and the 111..270 cal will shoot the 130 win. BST and Federal PREMIUM 130 GR. NOSLER BALLISTIC TIP. Try some Factory loads...Hand loads ain't always better..Good Luck

I have shot Federal Premium 180gr Nosler Partions, they are 2"-3" also.

Remove the stock and take your dremel to the barrel channel and hog it out good. I do this with all of them. The cheap stock on these guns will move on the forend just from the heat of the sun andput unwanted pressure on the barrel. I am not saying this is a cure all but but its a start. My wife has this exact rifle in same caliber and it shoots very well. I also found a couple hundred rounds through it made the biggest difference. After getting the gun to shoot its best group of 1 3/4" i stayed with that load for the last 2 yrs. A week ago i went out and put 20 rounds on paper at a 100yds and it shot under and inch. Veral Smith sells a kit to basically lap the barrel and save you all the shooting. I have found these rifles to shoot very well with little or no tweaking.

I think the bedding will help.  My 110 30-06 went from a solid 1.25" shooter to suddenly shooting 4-6".  The problem was, I had tightened the rear action screw first.  So make sure if you've had it out of the stock, that you tighten down the front screw, then snug down the rear screw.  May not be your problem, but something to check.

Bedding it is!  The action will easily shift and twist from side to side around 1/16", the bedding on this stock is terrible.  The pillars are all jacked up also.  I hogged a bunch of the stock out but the pillars are so deep looks like I am going to have to bed over top of them.  I kept having to refloat the tang and I just pushed on the barrel and noticed that the whole action would move from side to side.

I've got a stainless 116 in 300 RUM. It was sub MOA out of the box but I didn't like the flimsy stock. I replaced it with a B$C stock which improved the accuracy some more and is is a firmer stock and the rifle looks much better.

Looks like bedding did the trick. Counting the clean bore fouler my group came in just a shade under .7" at 130yds.

 :) Congrats Bearcat-successful solutions feel great, don't they ?

When the pillars don't reach all the way up to the action, I have hogged out around them with the Dremel & stacked enough brass washers to reach the bottom of the action, then epoxyed them in.  This can also be done to the bottom of the pillars if necessary. When done properly, if gives that great feel of the screw bottoming out, then reaching torque in the next quarter turn.

.7 is great shooting, but next winter, after hunting season when a moment of boredom sets in, you may want to give it a try.  ;) - Jim

Update time, more groups and all are very good.  I ran it across the chrono the other day.

Hopefully I can get it stretched out to 300 and 600 in the next few months.

I don't know how I missed this. I have a Savage 116 .30-06, and it will shoot just about any 150 gr. bullet, except the Federal blue box ammo. It also shoots 180 gr, ammo great well. I have never shot 165 gr. ammo in it, but will someday.

have a 114 classic 06 and it will shoot its tightest groups with 150- 165 grain bullets. while i hit things with 180 i have figured the rifle likes the lighter grain bullets for groups.
