38-55 Gets Bloodied!!
« on: October 27, 2010, 06:34:31 PM »
Made meat with the 38-55 today, nice doe at 30yds!! Hunted down an old skid road early this afternoon, stepped into a little clearing, off to my right a doe was standing looking at me broadside, would really like to have seen the impact of that 213gr bullet at 2200fps on a chest shot, but being a meat hunter, a neck shot that close was a cinch, so down she went, spectacularly too, she went right over backwards for some reason, must have been a reaction to the shot or something, but she just somersaulted over backwards, never had one do that before, but it sure was cool.  ;D

Jack got one this morning, I bumped it first, didn't get a shot tho, it ran right over to him and he shot it just a few minutes after I saw it! I went an got the trucklett and drove down to road as close as I could, then walked in a drug it out for him using a plastic tarp as a sled, worked slick, it was easier for me to drag it alone due to the narrow deer trails thru the ferns and trailing blackberry. We got it back to the rig and used my home made  game hoist for the first time to help skin and bag it.

The only thing that could have made the day better would have been if my son could have hunted, but he had to stay home and baby sit the kids, but he can go again friday, maybe he'll have as good a day as we did!!  :)

Yup, broke the ice killing a deer with a Handi, the 260 Rem Superlight gets to hunt the rest of the year!!  8) The season is almost over, Sunday is the last day of the regular season, then there's a few days in mid November for late buck only, doe tags end with the regular season, hopefully my son can fill his doe tag, last time we all had doe tags in 2003, I was the only one to fill one!!  :-\

The game hoist worked excellent, we had a couple hunters drive by when we were using it, they stopped and took pics and asked a bunch of questions, we told them the story of how it came about...... Opening weekend Saturday we looked for quite a while for a good tree to hang Jack's spike from to skin it, he made the suggestion that we needed a portable hoist and the idea was spawned, I imagined one that would fit the 2" tubing on the hitch-haul, Monday I made a drawing of what I wanted and went to East Side Steel and bought what I needed, by Tuesday afternoon it was all done and ready to paint!!  ;D I could have bought one, but it would need to be modified to fit the 1½" ID of the 2" tubing on the hitch-haul, but I did save some money by making it myself.....and as an added bonus, ended up with a Milwaukee Sawzall which I've wanted for a long time, my 18V Firestorm just didn't cut it....no pun intended!!  :D

Thanks,

Tim

Way to go Tim.  Hopefully mine'll do the same in two weeks.  It's gonna be the same rifle and same load.  We've been in a severe storm since Monday and I haven't been able to get over to the Soo for the RlL7.  Today I have to repair storm damage, but I'm going for it tomorrow.

A great hunt....you deserve it.

Good lick Tim!   ;D  I can't get over the size of those does though.  They'd be "good buck" size down here...  :-\

To bad you didn't get to try out the bonded bullets you got.  I would love to hear how they would do on a chest shot.

The game hoist worked excellent,

How 'bout that!  We just ordered one from SG!  Good to hear posative things.   ;)

Richard, I didn't test a bullet on a deer, but I did shoot one thru a 10" alder from 10' away, or almost thru, it stopped just a ½" short, split the back side, it lost the jacket in the tree somewhere, didn't want to cut the tree down to retrieve it, but the lead was mushroomed nicely and weighed 202grs of the original 213gr. I'll have to let Paul know so he can remedy the issue next time he makes some.

Thanks guys,

Tim

Pete,

It ain't the food that makes dem southern deer small, it's the 24/7 365 hunting season that does it. ;D  Least ways that was the problem when I was growing up in Kentucky.

What did you do today...for Freedom?
Today, at the front, he died...Today, what did you do? Next time you see a list of dead and wounded, ask yourself: "What have I done for freedom? What can I do tomorrow that will save the lives of men like this and help them win the war?"

Thanks, they aren't really very big deer, Jack's weighed 66lbs, mine 75lbs at the butcher, no head or lower legs, just the carcass ready to be cut and wrapped. Jack shot his a little lower in the neck with a 270Win 130gr NBT, it really messed up some neck meat and ruptured the heart sack ta boot, even tho it was hit well above the chest!! :o  Mine just put about a 1" hole thru the spine.
