Made meat with the 38-55 today, nice doe at 30yds!! Hunted down an old skid road early this afternoon, stepped into a little clearing, off to my right a doe was standing looking at me broadside, would really like to have seen the impact of that 213gr bullet at 2200fps on a chest shot, but being a meat hunter, a neck shot that close was a cinch, so down she went, spectacularly too, she went right over backwards for some reason, must have been a reaction to the shot or something, but she just somersaulted over backwards, never had one do that before, but it sure was cool.
Jack got one this morning, I bumped it first, didn't get a shot tho, it ran right over to him and he shot it just a few minutes after I saw it! I went an got the trucklett and drove down to road as close as I could, then walked in a drug it out for him using a plastic tarp as a sled, worked slick, it was easier for me to drag it alone due to the narrow deer trails thru the ferns and trailing blackberry. We got it back to the rig and used my home made game hoist for the first time to help skin and bag it.
The only thing that could have made the day better would have been if my son could have hunted, but he had to stay home and baby sit the kids, but he can go again friday, maybe he'll have as good a day as we did!!
