« on: October 27, 2010, 07:12:58 PM »
This was sent to me by my wifes uncle.
I have no idea when or where it was taked.

Hunting alone, he got his elk, set his camera up on a stump, set the timer and went back to pose...tick, tick and all's silent and then POP the flash goes off...job well done.

Later, back at home he downloads the photo and what do you think he sees

WOW!!!

I say' Lucky Hunter' - now he has a chance to fill his cougar tag, too.  Too bad he didn't look over his shoulder.
Thanks for the stump

Same here.  Not always, but fairly often circumstances dictate that I end up hunting alone.  That said, the dangerous game around here is pretty limited.  No wolves or mountain lions.  We got coyotes, bobcats, and wild hogs, which all present a fairly limited threat.  We have the RARE black bear in these parts, but very, very uncommon.  To the point that I've never personally even seen one in the wild.  Huge alligator population too, but since the only time I'm hunting in watery conditions is in the winter for ducks, I don't worry much (they go dormant in winter).

Truthfully, during the early part of deer season, my #1 fear while hunting isn't large animals - it's rattlesnakes.

I should've checked it myself.

#1 reflex when you get any incredible thing via email should be to verify it.  99.9% of the wild stories - whatever they might be about - are usually either complete bunk/fabricated, or are really, really twisted.

Heck, you can't beleave anything these days.
As far as Snoops goes, People say they are right most of the time but I happen to know more than once that they were wrong so I don't depend on them.
I guess I still should have tried to check it out.

Snopes cites their sources so that you can independently verify if you'd like.  In this case they show the original photo and cite the source for it.  That's about the most you can want out of research-based journalism.

Are the right 100% of the time?  No, few sources ever are.  HOWEVER, the VAST majority of the time Snopes is spot on.

That was sent to me a couple mos ago.
If anything it should say don't let your guard down. Whats a buddy going to do when several hundred yards away or more ?
We now have these critters where I hunt and it has put a damper on a quick nap. Guess turkey hunters are most at risk really as they mimic a turkey . I say that because bobcats attack turkey hunters around here .

First thing I thought when I opened it in my email was........Photoshop.

I was hunting alone about 4 years ago on the west side of the Cascades near Roseburg Oregon, and had parked on a dead end logging road to hunt a clear cut area. I heard a vehicle approach,A guy had shot a Buck above the area, and was looking for an easier down hill place to take him out. He had made a bad shot on the Buck and had to track him some distance before finding him. When he got back to the deer, he spotted a Cougar watching him.I guess the cougar had trailed the blood to the Buck.

He tried to chase it off, and the darn thing didn't want to leave. I heard the shot later, and he ended up filling not only his deer tag, but cougar as well.Young male lion around a hundred pounds. It can, and does happen.

I need to be out there hunting today, but it's so wet and miserable, this looks like a better place to be. ;D
Probably have a hard time keeping the powder dry on the old smoke-pole. That's my excuse anyway ;)

It's a shame folks pull this kinda stuff, but the fact remains that it COULD HAPPEN just like that, and most likely HAS HAPPENED. Be aware in the woods.

One of the MT LIONS I saw here in Va. was in a pile of brush . I had been on a deer stand with in about 20 yards for 2 hours when the dogs came by and picked up it scent and run it out. It came by at about 10 feet on its way to parts un known . At 20 yards had it wanted to attack I dare say it would have had me as I had no idea it was there.

It could, and good advice.

No such likelihood where I am... we don't have any big kitties, and bears are a ways east. The biggest threat to me hunting is killing myself trying to drag the big guy out, when I go waaaay too far in afoot.

yellowtail3 I was the same way some few years back , then saw a couple big cats and a bear climbed a tree at the Lowe's store up the road. Wife saw the bear a few days before in the driveway. Since several over 300 lbs have been killed on my road and thru. the woods about 2 miles.

This is interesting timing as it appears there may be another confirmed mountain lion sighting in Kansas:

Well folks, as someone whos spent about 50% of his life in a city recently ranked the murder capital of the U.S, and the other 50% in woods and jungles, I can personaly assure you predators don't just roam in the boonies. You should be aware and allert no matter where you are. The city streets can be more dangerous than the woods. I'm often in the woods alone, I go nowhere unarmed, and I carry both a cell phone and two way radio in the woods. I never forget the fact that I'm not the only predator in the woods and in the city I do everything possible to insure I'm not the game predators find an easy mark.

I hunt alone all the time.  All my friends and hunting partners work, and I am retired.  I go out alone every week or so for two or three days at a time.  Yes I am cautious, one mistake and I am a gonner.  Preditors are not my major worry, Yes I've had a few close calls with Grizzlies and Wolves, even a Couger in New Mexico while hunting Turkey.  The real danger for me is the environment.  Mother Nature is not very forgiving.  A fall through the ice at 60 below can be the last thing you ever do.

A slip while skinning an animal can be disasterous.  Simply wiping your face with the back of your hand while skinning a Beaver, then licking your lips can get you killed.  You have the bacteria from the water the Beaver was in on your hands.  You wipe your face with the back of your hand and transfer the bacteria to your lips.  Then you lick your lips later without thinking much about it.  Then suddenly the next day you are totally incopasitated with severe cramps, then the diarreah, then you start throwing up.  Within three to four hours you are so dehydrated and weak you can not get up, or do anything.  You can not tend to the fire in the stove and the cabin starts getting cold.  You pass out from weakness, and the cold takes over, you never wake up.  Another victum of Gardia, otherwise known as Beaver Feaver, a deadly bacteria.  It comes from the feces left by the Beaver in the pond they live in.
Where is old Joe when we really need him?  Alaska Independence    Calling Illegal Immigrants "Undocumented Aliens" is like calling Drug Dealers "Unlicensed Pharmacists"
What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.
