T/C Contender in 256 Win Mag
« on: October 29, 2010, 06:32:45 AM »
Anyone shoot one of these?  I found a carbine at a local shop with a case colored frame, wood stock and 24" bull barrel.  It comes with dies and brass as well.  Don't know anything about it yet, but was wondering what you all might be able to tell me.

Thanks in advance.

Have not shot one but the round is a 357 Mag case necked to 257.
Most of the loads are for a 60 grain JHP bullet  I have seen a couple loading for up to 100 grain bullets.
Just an easy way to make 25-20 loads with a common case.
Was thinking it could be a neat Whisper type round with 120 grain round nose bullets, like the 7.63 Whisper that uses a 30 Mauser case but throws 150 to 180 grain 308 bullets.
Would be a great round for Coyote, Raccoons, Javilina, rabbit, and squirrel gun out to 75 to 100 yards.
Even small deer withthe heavier or lead bullets.
Similar to what you would use a 22 Hornet for.

256 WM was my first Contender caliber back around '89 and I still have it, although it is a 10" octagon barrel not a carbine.  Bullet selection is somewhat limited.  The only 60 gr jacketed bullet is the Hornady 2510 flat point at around 2300 fps from my pistol.  They'll do quite a bit better from a 24" I imagine.  My barrel also shoots 75 grain spire points very well, albeit slower.  The heavier bullets carry their energy out a bit further than the 60 because of better BC and more momentum, but they don't shoot quite as flat.  I never did get around to trying any cast bullets.  My barrel would not stabilize Nosler 87 grain boat tail ballistic tips and I'm almost certain that to do what mcwoodduck alludes to (imulate the whisper) would take a custom barrel with a fast twist as the whisper also requires.

I really enjoyed shooting the 256, although all I did was punch paper.  However, my 223 barrel does everything the 256 did and bullet selection is greater so I seem to shoot it more.  Muzzle blast is about equal between the two in a short tube (in other words, lots of blast).  I had good accuracy with H-110 and not as good with H4227.  It's a dandy little caliber though.

P.S.  Forgot to add.........  Forming dies are very expensive, but if you are patient and use only brass 357 cases (no nickel) you can form them using only your sizing die by working it a little at a time.  You'll get losses due to split necks though.  I have about 200 rounds of factory 256 brass though so I didn't play with forming very many from 357.
Lord, please help me to be half the man my dogs think I am.

I have had a couple of .256 win mags - currently a 14".  Neat leittle round not expensive to load either.  I bought a cheap set of .30 mauser dies to use as an itermediate step in forming the brass.  If you anneal after the first step, you can cut your case losses to zero.  Like mentioned above, stay away from the nickel cases, the nickel tends to flake necking down this much and can screw up your dies.

I had the Custom shop make me a 24" bull 256.  My first 5 shots at 100 were all touching.  My next 5 at 200 measured  a little over 2 inches. Hornady 87gr SP averages 2350 with a close to max load of H335.  I use 221 FB bras necked up and shortened in my rifle.  Put a 223 exctractor in it.  Tho still want to neck down 357 but dont have time for that. Hope to get 75gr bullets loaded to see what they will do velocity wise. Buy it if you ever wanted one ;D
