Ammo confusion?
« on: October 29, 2010, 01:48:31 PM »
I have a rem 870 12ga with a 20" smooth slug barrel on it. Whan i originally sighted in the new barrel at 50yds, i was using Federal 2 3/4" 1 1/4oz power shok slugs at 1520fps. When i ran out of those i bought some new ones and they shot about 3 inches high at 50yds. After checking the box again I realized that i had picked up Federal 2 3/4" 1oz power shock slugs at 1610fps.  I then moved back to 75 yds and i am hitting dead on without touching the sights.  I dont notice any accuracy gain or loss between the two.
That being said which would be the better way to go ,1oz slug or 1 1/4oz slug?  Has anyone else ever run into this with their slug gun?  By the way i am planning on using these for deer.  I bought a new gun for this year and have been practicing like crazy with it so i know its every quirk before taking it out.  My other gun was my grandfathers winchester 1200 and i have been using it for 11 years now and decided that i want it to stay in nice shape.  Thanks for reading.   - Steve

To me the bigger the better in slugs. BUT if you are shooting on the money with the slightly smaller, I think I would smile and keep shooting them. I would not give up accuracy (quicker death) to have a bigger blood trail. ;)

+1 for the 1.25s.   Smacks with more power for quick knockdowns and possibly pass throughs making two wounds to leave a good blood trail if not DRT.

Thinking about it.
1Oz is 437.5 grains.  (7000/16)
1 1/4 ounce is 546.88 grains.  (7000/12.8 )  Or (437.5X 1.25)
The 7000 is how many grains are in a pound.

I think, either moving more than 1200 FPS is more than enough for deer, pigs or black bear.
My questing back to you is are your shots going to be 75 yards?
If so shoot the 1oz slugs, no guess work to 75 yards.  Just aim at the deer and bang dead deer out to 75 yards.
if your shots are going to be more on the 50 yard side shoot the 1 1/4 as the sights are there.
If you have to guess on the longer shots and hold over the deer at 75 yards..... Better to shoot the lazer of the two.

I shoot deer anywhere up to 100yds.  Depends on if i sit in the woods or on the edge of one of our fields.  Last year i shot 2 deer and both were 70-80 yards.  Thanks, mcwoodduck i like your thinking on leaving the sights and deciding what to use depending on where i am hunting.  Never even thought about that.  i could use the bigger ones in the woods or while driving brush and the smaller on the stand while watching a field. very cool. Thanks everyone for your responses, very helpful.  Keep them coming please.

I've been using the 1oz slugs for my entire hunting life (46yrs),and they have never failed me.I realy don't see any reason to endure more recoil and added expense of the heavier slugs. But that is just my opinion, and we all know about opinions.Use which ever you feel is right for you. They will both result in a very dead deer and backstraps in the pan. GOOD LUCK AND GOOD HUNTING.

I have only shot deer with the one ounce loads as well so maybe i should just stick with what i know.  gotta love those backstraps, just had the last ones for dinner yesterday.  Now ive got to shoot a couple more.  I only have a month before gun season.  Ive put about a 80 slugs through my gun in the last month getting used to it.  My shoulder cant wait till its over.

1 oz., large dia. 'balls' have been putting down big game since way back in the muzzleloading flintlock days. For dangerous game I'd probably go with the heavies, but that is close on. A deer wont know the difference.

I doubt the deer will ever know what hit it !
I shoot 1 1/8 lightfields and have not found a slug still in a deer yet. Haven't had to tracked one either .
The idea of using differen't slugs for different shot opertunity sounds good . But I agree with why punish yourself more than needed also.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

oddly enough it seems that the heavier slugs were easier on my shoulder.  but i do notice considerable more drop with them.  It seems to be the same amount of powder with a heavier slug.  either way i will keep practicing.  I only have a few more weeks to go till gun week in ohio and i want to be ready.
