350 Remington Mag vs 35 Whelen
« on: October 30, 2010, 09:06:42 AM »
What, if any, are the powder capacity differences between the two?

Performance differences? Advantages of either over the other?

WOW,
  I prefer Ford to Chevy  ::) ;D ;)

The 350 is a shorter OAL so it works (factory loaded) in a shorter action. Its got an edge in velocities with bullets under 250.

The 35 Whelen fits in a standard action. It not as fat so you get up to a couple more rounds in the mag. Its better with bullets over 250.

Truth be told, its the difference between and S&%T and a Fart. IMHO looking at both on paper, there is not enough to worry about. In reality, strong arguments are made for each.

I prefer the 35 Whelen, the better feeding, more rounds in the magazine and better performance with heavy weights wins me over.

Factory ammo availability may be an issue with either cartridge. But you can make 35 Whelen brass from 30-06 cases if you handload.

like cwlongshot said there so close in performance that its not worth discussing. Its more of a matter of what platform you want to put them in. If i was building a short handy carbine it would have a short action and be chambered in 350 if i was building a 22 in gun id probably go with the .35 because brass is easy to make.

Yes ballistically they are twins.  However the .35 Whelen is a longer cartridge requiring a longer action.  The .350 can function with a shorter, and hence lighter action.

The longer Whelen is better suited for longer bullets.  So if you have a hankering to shoot bullet heavier than 250 grains you'll get better velocities from the Whelen.

If you're a reloader, the Whelen cases can be made simply by running .30-06 or .270 brass through your sizing die.  Ask all your buddies at work to give you their once-fired .30-06 brass and you'll never have to buy brass.

I don't know if .350 brass could be made from other belted mags or not.  Even if this were possible, scrounging Win Mag brass is more difficult.

It can, very easily too.  I'd much rather do that than make .35W outta  .30-06.

I've done a good bit of case reforming and far prefer to size down, and shorten if need be, than to expand any already thin standard case neck very much.
