Glad not to sell my new Savage 220F
« on: October 30, 2010, 05:56:53 PM »
I just about made a grave mistake by having this gun listed :-[.  I took it out to the range and was I amazed! It feels like a centerfire, fires like a centerfire and hits the bull like a centerfire. When Savage tells you what load is good for this shotgun, they are not pulling your leg.  Ragging the same hole at 100 yards and less than 2" at 200 yards. This is as good as my .223 or maybe better?

I once had a H&R Ultra Slugster, which never let me down. I'm sold on this Savage....hands down over the H&R that I used to own. I don't believe that I will be letting my hands off of this firearm anytime soon. ;)

Congratulations!

It's a very gratifying feeling to have such success.

Let us know how she does this deer season.

Hey skinman.  Can you tell me what load you used to get those results?  I'm headed to Cabelas today to buy this gun and want to get good ammo right off the bat.  I'm thinking of shooting 2 3/4" Remmington Accu-Tips, after having read some other posts.

Also, do you have a high-end scope on that setup of yours?  I'm looking at getting the Cabelas EXT Shotgun scope, since it's on sale for $60 instead of $100.  I know it won't perform as well as a high-end Nikon, or the like, but the gun itself is going to set me back quite a bit.

Would love to hear from you.
Thanks

I have the Savage 220 also.  Great gun, my gun shoots the 3 inch Remington Accu-tips the best. I have a Leupold 2X7X33 shotgun scope on mine. I will never go back to any of my 12 guage slug guns.
buckshooter, stick with the Remington Accu-tips, but go with the 3 inch. I tried the 2 3/4, and they worked good, but not as accurate as the 3 inch.

Like all guns, slug guns are individuals and what shoots best in one won't shoot as well in another gun.  My gunsmith's 220 won't group the load mine likes and mine won't group what his likes.

The Savage comes with a hang tag that tells you which slugs they recommend.  Start with those but try anything similar until you find what your gun likes.

Mine groups a little under 1" with the Federal/Barnes 5/8 oz Expander (since discontinued so I ordered in some others to try).  I've done little shooting over 150 yards but the groups I've shot off a concrete bench and benchrest style rest held a wee bit over 2" at 200 yards if I discount the few called flyers.

Having used the older 210F 12 gauge pre-accutrigger rifles for years the 20 gauge is a big step up in my opinion.  It's lighter, shoots flatter and kicks less.
