I now have my own shorties! PICS ADDED
« on: October 30, 2010, 07:27:12 PM »
Back some time ago I bought a 12ga shorty.
It has an 18.75" cylinder bore barrel and chambered for 3" shells.
Shoots pretty good but does kick a little with 3" #4 buck and not much good over 20 yds.
Took it to a local gun smith a couple of weeks ago and had it threaded for screw in chokes and added a limbsaver to it.
Should make a nice, quick little truck gun.
While I was there I also took one of my 45/70 handy rifles and had it chopped to 18" and added a limbsaver to it also.
I picked them both up last night.
What a neet looking pair.
Plans call for a nice 2-7 x 32 scope that I have been saving just for this project.
I can now add these to my two 16" Winchester model 94 Trappers in 30/30 and 45 colt.
Will try and get some pics up as soon as possible.

Frank, you'll love the shorties.  My 16.5 inch Maxi on a BC carbine stock is my go to truck gun.  Thanks to Tim, I now have an 18 inch .38-55 also on a carbine stock.  Except for the stock, it's a twin to the one he used to take his nice doe this past week.  Today, I'm building the same load he used to take that deer.  A 213 gr. bonded bullet over RL7.   I tend to think of my .45LC carbine and my 22 inch .410 as shorties too.

Good luck and good shooting,

Pete

I've got a couple shorty shotguns now and I love 'em.
They're both cut to 20" and set up for deer hunting. The 12ga. has a 2.5x20 simmons on it and the 20ga. has fiber optic open sights on it.
when you cut 'em to 20" they balance real well.

Pics has been added.
I shot the 12 with  3" # 4 buck loads today along with the 45/70 with Win. 300gr HPs.
I really don't think they kick as much now as they did before they were cut.
Of course the Limbsavers makes all the difference in the world!
The 45/70 ended up with a Burris 2-7x35mm scope.
I think I am going to like these!!!  ;)

Over the years, I have made more than my share of shorties. I'm not a fan of short barrel rifle calibers.
But pistol caliber carbines and shotguns are just the ticket!!
