I am not sure why he told you it wouldn't work but as long as your .270 Handi is on an SB2 frame it is a strong action. A .270 shouldn't be on any other frame that I am aware of. Can you be more specific? Was the person telling you this the guy you bought it from?
I just sold a Handi .270 that did very poor with some powders and I had to load special low CUP pressure loads for the action to perform like my other handis. I sold it and gave the buyer the shells I had loaded for it, the recipe and primers and bullets it liked. He can shoot any shells he wants in it but I told him that to keep him from wasting money on other powder and bullets. If that is the case with you it may make sense, but that would be the only reason I could think of, the cratering primers keeping the action from opening smoothly from a hot load with the wrong powder..... Hope this gives you some kind of answer.
I sold mine in a face to face here in MN, but I explained exactly why the hot high pressure loads couldn't be used. If your gun is new it shouldn't be an issue. I though mine had excess head space but sent it to the gunsmith that H&R had me send it to and it was within tolerances.  thejanitor

It is a rare rifle that shoots maximum loads as good as loads that are just a bit milder.

I don't hand load, but my son has a 270 Handi that did fine with Remi's managed recoil 115 grain and this year he's moved up to core-lokt 130 grain with no problem.  I've used 150 grain core-lokt in it and didn't see any problems sighting in the scope. We had very little adjustments to make for the smaller rounds - but not much.  We sighted the scope in at 100 yds and then shot melons at various distances up to 200 yds and it killed a lot of melons.

For the type of game a .270 is suitable for, Remington 130 grain factory Core-Lokt ammo is suitable.  It should handle any factory ammo just fine.

My .270 handi shoots the cheapo winchester super-x and remington core-lokt loads in 150 grain good enough for reasonable hunting ranges i was getting about 1.5-2" 100 yard groups. I have never tried the higher priced factory loads in it their too rich for my blood. I am trying to fix a FTF problem that I created, once thats done i will get back to experimenting with handloads again, hopefully very soon. If i ever get mine shooting groups the way a .270 should be able to perform i will post the recipe.

See Best Factory Ammo in the FAQs, there are several good shooting loads listed for the 270, only one mention of the Light Mag which is what Hornady called that ammo before they renamed it.

I think the muzzle blast situation is waay overblown IMO.
On the range you wear ear protection period.

I have seen vids were youngsters use them in ground blinds and in case of a stalk, the report of the rifle in open country( meaning no roof or walls) is not near as loud as on a bench.  Most folks old or young don't hear much of a bang or even feel recoil if shooting at game.

Your rifle may or may not shoot that ammo well.
Each rifle is different and it's just a matter of finding out what shoots best in it. Alot of guys on here report that their rifles shoot best with less than max loads. I reload for a couple of my handi's and I've found the same to be true.
