Lee FC die in 45 acp ??
« on: October 31, 2010, 12:21:54 PM »
Have any of you guys that use a Lee - factory Crimp Die for 45 acp ever tried it on the 45 LC ?

Lee shows the same part number for both the ACP as well as the Auto Rim , but a different one for the 45LC and 454 , and I was wondering if the only thing different was the over all depth of the dies themselves or if the Dia. was different also , any input or info ?

Don't know if this is what yer lookin' for but the LEE .45 Colt FC is a roll crimp and the LEE .45 ACP FC is a taper crimp.

I believe the FCD is cartridge specific, rather than caliber specific.

45 colt =roll crimp, so that is correct.
Also many 45 colt bullets are sized to a little larger Diam. than 45 ACP in order to fit the CYL.  throats
of 45 colt pistols.  That makes the loaded case Diam. larger than a 45 ACP.
The lee FCD would most likely reduce the case Diam. a little to much and also reduce the bullet Diam.,
and more so if lead bullets are used.  So I think it is a no can do.

I have used my Lee .45acp crimp die on .45 Colt before I bought dedicated Colt dies, but it was just for a single shot carbine, so no issues with bullets pulling under recoil.

If yer looking to put a taper crimp on the .45 Colt, Lee does offer a taper crimp die for .45 Colt / 454 Casull.
Part number 90786 in the LEE catalog.

The reason I was asking is that Lee lists the same die part number for the 45 acp , 45 Auto Rim and the 45 schofield in both the Factory crimp ( 90864 ) as well as the Taper crimp ( 90785 ) .

They also list the same die in 45 LC & 454 Casull , Factory ( 90865 ) , Taper ( 90786 )

Now the acp uses a Taper crimp most of the time , while the A.R. as well as the schofield both use a Roll crimp , was just hoping to get by with one crimp die for all of my 45's as I load all but the 454 Casull .

If you see what I'm getting at .

If you are looking for a good crimp die for a revolver i would suggest looking at a Redding profile crimp die. They run about 22 bucks and I have had good luck with them for over 20 years or more. I have tried Lyman and Lee but find the Redding to be better .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

I have both the Lee 45 acp and the Lee 45 LC.  The acp die does a taper crimp.  The LC die does a role crimp.  I wouldn't load either round without the appropriate crimp die because it is also a sizing die.  Every so often something is screwed up and the Lee die finds the problem round.
