629 Classic
« on: October 31, 2010, 12:34:52 PM »
This may be a repeat of an earlier post.  I am interested in purchasing 629 6 inch full lug on the bottom.  It does not have a transfer bar safety.  Looks to be 95 percent or better.  This gun sure has a nice trigger.  I think I would be happier with it than a new rugger red hock.

What is the gun worth?

Thanks,
Sam

Are you sure it's a 682? I find no such listed in Blue Book so really don't know what to tell you on value.

Sam, if it's in the 95% condition you mention in our phone conversation Blue Book says it's worth $485. Honestly that's a bit more than I personally think they are worth as I also mentioned during our conversation.

Now in 98% condition which is about as perfect as a fired gun can get BB says $640. If it has been fired more than a cylinder full or has any marks at all I'd not call it 98% and 95% is a really fine condition for a fired gun really. It would require box at least and 98% would require, box, tools and papers to me.

I personally think an honest price is about $450 so if you pay more be aware you're doing so more out of desire for that particular gun than what it's actually worth. I have done that myself so I do know how it can be when ya get it in your head that's the one for you.

I've had a 6 1/2" 629 Classic since late in 1990, and a 5" version since '91. They have both been truly superb handguns for me.
Here's the 6 1/2" version:

And here's the 5" version:

Classic and Classic DX not the same. If it's a DX Blue Books says it's worth about $100 less than the Classic. That makes no sense to me tho as the DX was selected for accuracy at the factory and ran at least $100 more than the Classic.

I have no explaination for the lower price on it as I think they are worth more not less.

Around me in Ohio I've never seen one sell for less than $600 at shows.
I have one, and I LOVE it!

I bought a Classic DX a lot of years ago an 8-3/8" barrel gun. That was one super accurate revolver. Back in '97 I was preparing for a handgun hunt for fallow deer in Florida and planned to take it, my scoped TC 7-30 Waters and my S&W 29 with 10-5/8" barrel and use which ever seemed appropriate for the terrain when I got there.

In one test of it at 100 yards I was planning to shoot a five shot group to test my loads for the trip. The first three shots went into a half inch and the last two only opened it to an even 2". I came close to stopping after three to save that target but stuck with the plan. I still kept it for years tho I have no clue what might have happened to that target by now. The DX guns were extremely accurate revolvers.

BTW I took my fallow on that hunt with the TC at around 80 yards. I didn't even uncase the 629 Classic DX on that hunt but it sure took game on a lot of others.

Are you sure it doesn't have a transfer bar safety? It would be the first one in several decades without such a device.

S&W doesn't use a transfer bar safety. They use a sliding hammer block. It comes up to block the hammer when the rebound slide moves forward and moves down when the trigger is pulled and the rebound sldie moves rearward. It's the part that may cause a little rattle when you shake a S&W. (not necessarily the only part that can rattle though)

Ruger has a transfer bar that slides up and then the hammer hits it, S&W uses a hammer block that slides down so the hammer doesn't hit it. If you don't believe me, call S&W. S&W has been using them for 80 or so years give or take. A transfer bar will move forward if you push on it when it is in it's raised position, the hammer block won't.

No , no ....its not I don't believe you , guess I never looked at them that closely.  I've seen your collection of Smiths.....I'm sure you know.  Honestly , I've never had any of my revolvers apart.

One of the first things I do with a new revolver adoption is take it all apart for inspection, cleaning and lube. I got one once where someone had removed the hammer block........when I asked why the answer was because it rattled. Well, I take most everything apart when I get it if it's something I think I can actually get back together.
