Weekend Dog hunt / edit Photo's added
« on: November 01, 2010, 04:08:34 AM »
No photo's folks, I know, I know this thread is useless without photo's. So you'll have to read my mindless scribes.

Recently I was introduced to a real nice bloke that is a very experienced hunter. Been hunting all his life. A lot with firearms but 20 years ago he was also a prolific Bowhunter. Recently he took up the bow again and I have been helping him with arrows, strings and such. As a thankyou he took me to a local property he has been shooting/ hunting on for a long while.

After arriving at this property 20 minutes from home we set stand in a likely looking clearing with a tumble down shed, numerous falls of cut tree's, rusting farm machinery, a wide field of view and my mate whistled for Foxes and Dogs while I stood with my Bow. Bloody wind kept changing which wrecked any ambush plans we had so we went for a walk around the rest of the block. My new mate was telling me he has never seen so much water over the property, or the old Sand Quarry so full of water. It has formed into an awesome Lake, plenty of Ducks, fish and other wildlife in evidence.

Apparently the banks are near vertical [ funny that being an abandoned Quarry ] There's one spot where you can reliably put in a Canoe when the water level falls to normal levels. The Lakes about 550 metre's x 300 metres and very deep. If only the authorities where not so short sighted as to ban Duck Hunting completely in Queensland ???

It backs onto a State forest via a swamp and a burbling creek. My mate told me Pigs wander out of the State Forest and into the swamp. The rest of the block is mainly overgrown grass, second growth natives and Pines, it has had past lives as a Dairy and a Pineapple farm. Other crops where grown also. There is other swampy regions and an old drainage channel which links several other dams. The local Aborigines in times past called the region I live Place of Snakes which white fella's bastardized into Caboolture.

I was definitely watching my step as I'M sure Coastal Taipan's and Eastern Brown Snakes are about this place. They are not uncommon in the district and I've seen many Browns at the local Archery club and my Daughters school had a scare with a Taipan and Several Red Belly Black Snakes last summer. These Snakes are highly aggressive and No 2 and No 3 ranked of the most venomous in the world.  Red Bellied Black Snakes would be prolific around the water also, they'll make you sick usually. Ask my Dad, a Red Belly layed him up for a week. Luckily I'm a clumsy stumbling type  :-[ and can't help but make noise to scare em off

On the way to this lake, along an overgrown track I put up a couple of Quail. One presented for a shot at about 10 metres, I took a shot at it's head with a Judo tipped arrow. These points feature a blunted tip point with 4 spring wires that catch on undergrowth and prevent you loosing your arrow. They are good small game heads and would really mess any meat up on a tiny Quail but I  missed  ::) the lightning quick little blighter. My mate wandered into the thicker cover to put it's mate up for me but an animal with a brain the size of a pea outsmarted us  :P

My mate has cut a Rifle range which is about 5 metres wide and has 100, 150, 200 metre targets with a small target pinned to a Pine tree way beyond these - probably 240 metres from memory. A makeshift bench is set up under a nice shady tree. While walking down the range which is not too far from where we where whistling [ certainly in a Dogs earshot ] we found very fresh tracks of a Dog and Bitch trotting down the Rifle range. We spotted tracks with prominent claw impressions which indicated they had scented us and took off. I'll kid myself and say they where lucky the wind changed or a broadhead may well have whistled through their ribs ::) :P

While he poisoned the Rifle range weeds I went for a quick wander to poke about the place but water in every low spot, swampy regions, full drainage channels and Dams really limited how much I could look at. We've had record rain fall so far this spring and the long range forecast indicates plenty more to come in following months so I can't see this block drying out for ages yet

I spent an hour or 2 stump shooting with my 45# Tradtech Pinnacle and a Judo tipped arrow instead of exploring and perhaps setting stand and whistling for Dogs or Foxes again. Had a ball imagining the various rotted Pine tree stumps and clumps of vegetation where Pigs, Rabbits and other game animals. Stump shooting really is the best practice you can have with a Hunting bow.

I hope this gent will take me to the property again. It's 20 minutes from home and in a dryer time has Pigs to hunt and the odd Wild Dog. There's bound to be Foxes, Hares and Quail are a blast pun intended with the shotgun. There's a 200 plus metre rifle range with a bench in a cool breezy shady spot and great terrain to stump shoot shoot with my Bow. Whats not to like ;D

With luck in a couple of weeks a 303.35 I'm having put together will be finished and I'll ask my mate if he can take me to this property again so I can sight the new rifle in. Right now the US Postal Service is holding up the build as I'm waiting on some NECG rifle sights and a Special Interest arms picatinny scope mount - Getting impatient folks >:(

Thanks mate had a good day out

I've been back out to this place with no luck folks. The other week we set stand and my mate blew his fox whistle, I waited with my Bow - Something was responding to the whistle - could tell the way the birds where calling. Something kept drawing my attention 70 yards or so to the right of our stand on the edge of the Lake, could not see a thing, scrubs too thick, just had a feeling, then we coulds hear the birds alarm calls as it circled from right to left - obviously cut our wind and bolted. Down to the right, exactly where something had been attracting my attention we found a very rotten 3/4 eaten fresh water Eel stached under a low shrub, definately stached by what responded to the fox whistle, no tracks to tell if it was a Canine.

Since then my mate has got a phone call from concerned residents with Dingo's  / Wild Dogs howling, Bawling and making a nuisence of themselves around resident's homes. No luck when he went out there the next night with his spot light and .223, they'd moved on well and truely. Since then regular bloody heavy rain has ruined any chance of even getting out to the place even to have a play on the rifle range without chewing up access roads and running the risk of getting bogged big time, probably sink to China, it's that wet out there.

Re: Weekend Dog hunt / edit - Morning Stumpshooting
« Reply #2 on: January 29, 2011, 01:43:07 AM »
Unfortunately I don't have any photo's of the property to share but will fix this in coming weeks. I know , I know I said that the last 2 times.

I spent last Sunday morning Stump Shootin with my mate Allan on this property he takes me too on occasion. Stumpshooting is about the best practice a Bowhunter can get and really hones your skills in distance judgement when shooting in the bush.

We went to the property so Allan could spray some herbicide to help control the weeds on the 250+ metre Rifle range and while there I knocked back a few Pine Tree branches that where growing over the edges of the range

This place is Stump Shootin Heaven with it's numerous rotted tree stumps, old farm implements litering the place, tracks criss crossing it and the real chance something tasty might happen along. A Bee Keeper has set up and maintains a nice little meadow as well.

In past visits we have set stand a couple of times and played at whistling up some feral dog's but on those occasions the wind palyed havoc and the scrub due to the emormous rainfall we have had in the last 12 months has overgrown makin visibility of approaching game poor. This last batch of rain has kicked the grass along something fierce, in places it's more like a sugar cane farm just before harvest. There is so much water about any game bar Birdlife is scattered and the scrub has grown so thick it's better to use a Shotgun than a Bow

We both had our current favourite bows and deemed the morning the Tradtech Pinnacle 2 Vs Pilgrim deflex reflex bow challenge. No contest I might add, other than the rare occasion I allowed Allan to place his arrow closer to the mark than I did. No use breaking his spirit or his pride in how good his new Pilgrim Deflex Reflex shoot's, afterall why would I coach him to shoot better than me ?

Allan tried to blame me  :o for him sticking his very first shot from his Flu Flu arrow [ special arrow for wing shooting that goes like heck for 40 yards and then drops to earth ] into the top of the tree. He reckons I did not throw the target down the centre of the Rifle Range  ??? I'd like to point out who was in control of the Bow and Arrow and the very poor condition of the rotted, water laden and mildew encrusted cushion that feel apart as I threw it - 15 feet off centre  ;)

With the Flu Flu session cut short we set off on a wander to the back of the property Stump Shootin as we went. Debris from the recent flood waters deposited in tree's and over Lantana made for great fun imagining feeding Deer and grazing Goats that we mercessly rained our Judo tipped arrows at. Judo points have 4 spring loaded arms that prevent arrows burying in ground cover and snag on branches etc , they are nearly indestructable and unloosable.

We swapped bows for a few arrows and the Pilgrim deflex reflex does shoot very well but the more aggressive deflex reflex and lighter limbs of the Tradteck Pinnacle 2 limbs make it an unfair comparision - hows that for a load of biased rubbish - hope your reading this mate as I was carefull to leave out the bit where you exclaimed F#*k - this thing shoots a metre higher than my bow at 50 yards  :-X

You may have heard it's been a bit wet in the East Coast States of Australia. Queensland  {where I live} is approx 668 000 square miles and approx 75% has been flooded at different times since Christmas - we have been through the biggest natural disaster in Australian history. Flood waters are still flowing streadily South into the Murray Darling and Eyre Basins. They will flood these systems as they travel Sth and Sth West into Outback and Central Inland Australia for the next 3 or 4 months

At the creek it was apparent that more than 2 metres of water had flowed over the causeway, which put the normally gentle litle creek at over 4 metres. It had flowed over the back half of this property and going off the debris in the tree's around the Lake had flowed a metre or more over it's banks which would have linked it to the nearby Tidal Creek just outside the boundary. It must have been perhaps a kilometre wide. We certainly have had more than our share of rain up here.

As we walked talked and shoot our way out the back we spooked a pair of Quail, I could easily have imagined them in my campoven but the fun police won't let us shoot them anymore either. We tracked them along for a bit and where walking in single file through the thick and long grass both walking heavily to spook snakes when we heard some small birds causing a bit of a commotion.

We followed the noise and found a group of Finches chattering around another bird that hanging upsidedown with it's feet entagled in a Spider Web, I did not get a good look at it but think it was a female Red Browed Finch. Allan was closest and picked the little bird from the web and set it free. It flew away and joined it's companions. A large browny coloured Spider was on it's way down the web for Lunch at the time. I know there are variety's of bird eating spiders around the Caboolture district - this will learn me for not bringing a camera ! Good deed done for the day we continued on scarring the heck out of every imagined or real target we could find.

We Stump Shot our way around the property for another couple of hours, stopped for a chat with the bee keeper. We shoot a few more arrows on the way back to the 4 x 4 and wound up the morning. Hopefully I'll spend many more excellent mornings Stump Shooting with Bow , Arrow and Judo point and on occasion mix in some high calibre entertainment on the Rifle Range in the near future.

Allan went back there the next day with his pinpoint accurate little Sportco .22 rimfire and shot the branch off that the Flu Flu arrow was stuck in to recover it.

Does anybody else have a favouite Stump Shooting or woodsy spot, what have you seen, what other capers do you get up too there when wandering the scrub with your bow or Firearm ?

Here's some photo's folks. We went for another Stumpshoot on Sunday. Nothing to exiting happened. Found a few bedding area's where Roo's had spent some time. Plenty of Ducks and Turtles around the Lake. No sign of any Game animals, it's just to wet

and a few more. As you can see it's a bit lush at the moment due to the record breaking rains

Nice land, mate. Pity about the lack of game. Hope you manage to score something soon. I'm looking forward to seeing this 303/35. What action is it on? What sort of stock?

Here's some pictures of her Kombi - more details up on the surplus military forum.

SMLE No1 Mk3 action , TSE No5 profile barrel, Ramline stock and a lovely blueing job. so dark it glows. I have mounted a Tasco 2 - 7 x 32 World Class in Arctic Fox quick release rings so I can use the Recknagel sights up close.

The Tasco will be swapped over to a Burris Timberline 4 X 20mm Compact within a month. The 4 power is plenty of scope for the shooting I do. If and it's a big If, the 4 power scope does not prove suitable it will go on my Marlin .44 mag Lever and the Tasco will go back on the SMLE
