08 Handi says DO Not Exchange Barrels
« on: November 01, 2010, 05:10:14 PM »
Just picked up a handi with HY on the serial and has a 44 mag barrel on it. I went by serial number and says it is a 2008 model and on the other side of the reciever it says Do Not exchange barrels  only 44 mag or 357 mag and shotgun. Did I end up with a shotgun reciever? On H&R site it says other barrels will fit.

Check the FAQ, there's a section on determining if it's an SB1 or 2 frame.  I believe the SB2's are skeletonized, but you should confirm that.  8)

It's a shotgun frame with a small firing pin. I've got one of those frames with a 22 Hornet barrel on it. No more primer problems with the Hornet on that frame. ;D

Welcome! That would be a Gardner MA made SB1 rifle frame, the SB1 rifle frames are the only frames with marking like that on the right side, the only barrels H&R will fit to it are 357 and 44 mag as well as standard shotgun barrels, other accessory centerfire rifle barrels require an SB2 rifle frame.

OK, I found out that this is different then what I wanted! I went by serial and the sb2 on the barrel. So what shotgun barrels will fit on here for sure? Thanks so much for all the quick responses, I am a handiholic now and plan on buying a high pressure reciever and 30/06 within the next month, but I will keep this 44mag round and add some shotgun barrels to it. Thanks again

All shotgun barrels except the 10ga shotgun and 12ga Ultra Slug Hunter barrels will work on the SB1 frame. SB2 marking on the barrel isn't relevant to the frame it ends up on, they're marked that way long before they're fitted to a frame, confusing, but that's the way the do them.

Tim wouldn't the 22Hornet,30-30 and trapdoor 45/70 also be OK for his frame

H&R won't fit them, but they'd be ok if fitted properly yourself.
