My mom's parents were somewhat short on English. But all the kids grew up fluent in it, and short on the language of the old country. In the parish I was in, the Eritreans, Arabs, Greeks, Russians, Romanians, and Serbs all were the same - the older generation that first came over was somewhat lacking in English, but still made the effort to use is as best they could, and all the kids were thoroughly American. And they all came in legally and most became citizens not by government fiat, but took the time and effort to take the classes, take the tests, take the oath. Yes, it is fine to keep and honor the traditions of the old country, and great to have the various ethnic festivals, they all enrich us.
But that isn't what is happening now with the people who are here illegally. And that is the set of people that those evil, racist conservatives are complaining about, not those who are here legally.
Of course, those of the leftist, nanny state persuasion, as we see with the original post on this thread, twist everything out of shape. There is no difference to them between someone who came here legally and someone who flouted our law to come in. No difference between people doing their best to assimilate to our culture, as varied as it is, and those who demand that the majority cater to them, who make no attempt to assimilate to our culture.
