Help Please - 700 ADL 30-06
« on: November 02, 2010, 11:53:52 AM »
I took my ADL off the stock last week after using it to deer hunt for a good cleaning.

After putting it back together, I can't get the shells to feed after I run the bolt.  I thought it was just an old spring (bought gun in 1984) so I ordered one from Remington and installed it.  That didn't help.

Any thoughts on how to fix this or what is wrong?

Did you get the follower in pointed the correct direction?

Yes I did.  It is tapered so it will only go in one direction.  That was my first thought as well.

I guess I don't understand.  I bought a new spring and installed it like shown here.

I owe you an explanation.

First I sent you the link because it reinforces what you have already done regarding the installation of the follower on the spring.

I had a similar problem to yours a few years ago.  I had cut the stock down on my 700 ADL for my son when he was twelve.  Later I was weighing my options; put a thick recoil pad on the stock with a couple spacers.

The plan changed when I came across a takeoff stock from a custom gun maker who uses Remington 700 actions to build on.  This was at the Big Show in Reno, NV.  I paid $45 for the stock and was one happy boy.

When I got home I pulled the old stock off bedded the barrel, and let it cure.  Once that part of the project was completed I installed the spring and follower in the magazine well.

The problem was that it would not properly feed rounds.  I tried a number of fixes as far as the direction the spring was facing to installing the follower on the spring.  There are a couple of ways.

Trial and error method until it worked.  I think you have the answer and you mess with it until it works.  It does not require force just patience.

If you have not fixed it in another month let me know and I will pull my rifle apart and take pictures of the installation that is working.  I do not want to take the rifle apart at this time because I still have a bear tag.  And the rifle is sighted in to do the job.

Thanks, guys, for reminding me to pay attention.  I've had this same issue with a Savage 110, which is very susceptible to having the magazine spring installed incorrectly.  It took me three or four "tweaks" to get it right.

Now I've got a Rem 700 ADL on layaway and I know that sure as the sun shines, I'm going to take it out of the stock, I need to remember to pay close attention to how that spring is installed when I take it apart.

I did not take pictures yesterday when I had my Remington 700 apart.  The assembly of the cartridge follower and spring appeared failure proof.  But after putting it together it was clear the spring, magazine follower assembly is direction and could not be assemble incorrectly, right?

The guts of the magazine on the ADL require the action to be placed into the stock to hold it in place.  I think this is a little tricky because a slight cant can develop in the spring/follower.  A quick visual inspection showed that the follower was slightly out of alignment.  Using finger pressure I was unable to correct the problem.  Recalling what worked the last time I had a problem I seated a DUMMY round in the magazine and heard the assembly click into place.  Most likely this would not have worked with the action tightly in place with action screws.
After things were lined up I tighten the action screws and placed the dummy round in the magazine into the chamber a few times and chambered it without any problem.  It was a good reminder that I need to create three more 270 dummy rounds to I can do the drill from a full magazine.*

**A safety footnote for whoever reads this.  During the last couple of months I have read of two cases of accidental discharges of firearms at home with the user cycling live rounds in their firearms.  In both cases neighbor hearing the discharge of a firearm called the police.  In one case the person of interest was a “X” felon who cannot own or live in a residence with a firearm in it.  The firearms were legally purchased by his wife.  Does the wife keep her guns or him?

The follower-spring assembly on my Remington 722 is a little different than the 700 setup.  It is unknown if Remington has modified this during the production years of the 700.

Specklebelly:  The other day I had my ADL apart and took photos as I reassembled the rifle.  Afterwards I made a trip to the range and the rifle functioned just fine.

If your rifle is still not feed correctly I can post the pictures.  Your wishes.

I know this going to sound like a smart Alec question but did you get the magazine box seated properly.
Many years ago I drove myself crazy because I failed to put the magazine box back in at all.
And I have also had guns brought to me for repairs with box in backwards and miss aligned.
