Help with No.1 field carriage
« on: November 03, 2010, 12:40:14 PM »
Hi can anyone help.

I am trying to build a 1/4 scale 3” Parrott mounted on a No.1 field carriage and could do with some help.
Does anyone know the full size dimensions of the square nuts on the sides of the cheeks and how many are there on each side? I have looked at photos on the net but none really show up.

Also what goes through the three counter bored holes on the top of the carriage that holds the Axle strap?  Are they coach bolts or long studs with nut at each end? Because in photos it looks like they are just three round disks.

Thanks
Tony

Rotunda,
There are really too many details to build a #1 carriage with no plans.
The three holes that hold the axle strap are countersunk on top, bolts dropped in, then the top of the hole is plugged with a wooden dowel.  This prevents water from getting in the hole.

Double D,
Thanks for the Antique Ordnance site. I emailed them and they got back to me fast, but living in England it’s not so easy trying to work out how to get an International Money order in US dollars.

Zulu,
Thanks for the information.  A friend gave me a set of Plans by William F. Green and these are what I am working too but they are just not detailed enough for the size of model they produce.

If you have paypal and they'll accept it works great .I rescently  purchased a Hanix equipment manual form England . My only mistake was crossing euro and pounds symbols.

I know I am preaching to the converted on this site, but anyone thinking of building a No.1 field carriage has to get a copy of book No.12 from Antique Ordnance Publishers, http://lassengunsmithing.com/AOPCatalog.htm , before they start construction. On advice with help from Double D, I just got my copy today and I can’t put it down. Dimensions are for full size Ordnance and there is a table in the back of the book to build reduced scale size models
We can’t normaly get anything as detailed as this on U.S. Civil War in England but I now have a great Christmas present from my wife.
