Model 70 Featherweight Question (pics added)
« on: November 03, 2010, 01:01:55 PM »
I had a little money and I was looking for another Model 700 project gun.  Today I ran across a like new Model 70 Featherweight in 7mm-08 with Leupold mounts and a cheap Bushnell Sportview scope for $525.00.  It's a New Haven gun and the serial # is G14229X.  My questions are when was it made and what kind of action is it?  It looks like a CRF to me but I'm no Winchester expert.  The rubber buttplate is red.  I'm not crazy about the caliber but the rifle is stunning and I figure it'll knock a 150lb whittail over.

Here are some bad pics.  I stuck the $100.00 Made in the PI Simmons on it to see how it shoots.

Have you checked your temperature today?  I have always wanted one, well what I want is my brother’s Feather Weight in 6.5X55 Swede.

Brother misunderstood and gave me a sportized Swede 96 for retirement.  A good rifle but not a Model 70 Feather weight by any means.  I think you paid a fair price for it, and you might just like the 7MM-08 in the long run.

I have been watching Swamp People and you must be the envy of the neighborhood.

Yes, it's a CRF M70 classic. I can see the blued extractor in your pictures. IMHO you got a good deal. I also like a 30-06 but I've got a 7mm-08 and it's a great cartridge too. It will drop an elk using proper bullets.

Well the G means after 1968, but the remainder of the number seems short.
It might be a Classic and CRF.
We need another bad pic of the boltface, please.  :)

Good deal Swampman!
It's a Classic CRF. I think they started making them in the late 80s or early 90s. Very nice guns.
I used to have one in .243 and enjoyed it alot.
Many women do use the 7mm-08 for elk.
Congratulations, your a M-70 guy now!   ;D

featherweights are great guns. Ive got a 257 roberts and a 280. Mine are both push feeds. The 280 is a tack driver the .257 not so much. Out of all my bolt guns nothing fits me better or points better then a featherweight.

Same here. My 6mm Rem is a tack driver and it snaps to shoulder very naturally. The rifle feels right, shoots very well, and it looks good. Mine was accurized+pillar bedded+"timneyed" by Hill Rifle Co.
If i am carefull with the reloads and the wind and the shooting, it will put 3 Sierra 87 gr HPs into 1" at 200 yards.
So far, i like it better than any other rifle that i have shouldered, and i tried pretty much all of them.

Mine is push feed, made during the USRAC period, whenever that was.

All I could find was Hornady 7mm-08 Superperformance 139 grain SSTs.

I took it to the range and it strings as it heats up (and cools down) left to right about 5-6"s.

After I got home........

I reduced the trigger pull to 2lbs and put some GunSlick on the engagement surfaces. Huge improvement! I put a piece of plastic shim stock right in front of the front action screw which floated the barrel nicely.  The action was a booger to get out of the stock but it finally popped free.

I'll shoot it again and see what it does.

[a like new Model 70 Featherweight in 7mm-08 with Leupold mounts and a cheap Bushnell Sportview scope for $525.00]

Good deal - That's what I paid for my also like-new 6.5x55 M70 FW Classic with a 2-7x33 Leupy in Leupy mounts.

Mine's wearing a Trijicon Safari 1.25-4x24 IR scope now.

I wish mine were a 7X57 or .270.  Why the low powered scope?

I've found that I've never needed more than a 4x scope for deer, etc, out to 300yds, since I started hunting in the early 60's.

I've also never had occassion to shoot any farther.

YMMV, of course.
