Well, the quest to cast my own rifle boolits and then hunt with them, came to a sucessfull conclusion yesterday.
Had hoped for a cow moose tag, NOT. Hunted elk and saw tracks. Was asleep at the switch as per application date so only had one white tail tag this year and that was filled yesterday with a yearling buck.
About a 100yd shot, and the 355gr LBT/WFN boolit provided a decisive conclusion to the hunt.
Bang Flop, DRT, however you want to say it, one shot from the #1 at about 2290fps M.V. and it was time to get the hands dirty.
AS yet, don't have the groups I desire, but ran out of time and settled for 55grs of RL #7 behind the 355gr LBT which provided a huntable group for the expected distance.
With this velocity, and providing I can decrease the group size, the rifle should provide a center of kill zone hold to at least 200yds. Maybe more, but time/test will provide that answer.
The chronograph showed a tad over 2500fps on some tests, but the 2290average load got the nod for this season.
Not seeking the upper velocities, but this is just where my tests have brought me at this point.
Took the critter a bit high and through the spine, so did not see the desired results of a through and through behind the shoulder hit.
However, the instant results were nothing if not an indication of a very deadly combination.
That LBT, Wide Flat Nose (WFN) boolit is like hitting the critter with an already expanded 30 caliber bullet at over 2000fps.
There is a drawing - fund raiser for local Lions Club - held in this area for a buffalo hunt, just maybe I'll buy a few tickets this year, as I'd sure like to see some more results from this 45/70 before next hunting season!!!!!!!!!
Keep em coming!
