steel shot for old guns ?
« on: November 04, 2010, 08:21:30 AM »
Just wondering if anyone makes a special shot cup or cup liner so you could use steel shot in an older gun with a choke? Thanks for any information, Ron

What kind of gun, how old, how tight.  What do you plan to hunt and how?

Everything I have read on this subject indicates that Bismuth shot is the only real option for nontoxic shot in old guns. If you use steel, it wrecks the chokes and can even break the solder that holds the barrels together in double guns.

Yes and no...

The British have two standards for there steel shot.

The base level loads are for older guns with tighter chokes etc.  Low pressure, low payload weight, smaller shot size.

They also have high performance steel level loads which are very much on par with what we are using here stateside.

If you don't mind shooting #4-#6 shot in 7/8 or 1 oz loads at 1200-1300 fps its quite doable.
