Lloyd, I love the U.P. in the summer!  But sometimes it seems that summer is very short up there.  :)  I love taking a two week vacation up there, but I'm also happy to come back.  At least the UP is less politically correct than the Lower, but Texas is even more so.  See ya Brother.  44 Man

Lloyd, we got down to freezing last night from that cold Canadian front that pushed through.  But that can't compete with the Texas sun .... it's up to 70 right now and headed higher.  :)

  • I feel much better now knowing it will get worse.
We got Gulf weather up here >:(  20 deg C rain and wind. Nothing moving and I'm not either. It does hold down the heating costs.

My father was born and raised in the U. P. calumet

I still have relatives up there and hopefully that's where I'm going to retire. I love it up there.

I lived in Lansing for a few years back in the late '60's.  Co. I worked for transferred me back to Tennessee within 70 mi of where I grew up.  Scenery down here can't compare with the UP but I like the summers long even if it is HOT.

Got some lake effect snow coming off Lake Michigan last Friday in southern Michigan.  Some accumalation, but all gone after a day or so.  In the mid 60s now and will be this week.  Headed up near Lloyd's way at the end of the week for deer camp.  A place near Lloyds was voted the best pasties in the UP.

Love the UP.  First went there when I was 5.  Spent 6 weeks at Clear Lake back in '73 as part of the Youth Conservation Corps.

Lloyd, you going to your deer camp?

Man, I love pasties. My mom makes them from my grandmothers recipe. My family were copper miners up there and took them in the mines for dinner. My Great grandfather was a security guard for (I think) Hercola. A couple of years ago my uncle gave me great grandad's Colt Police Positive. It was a very emotional moment for me.

Jim, Cherish that Colt from your Great Grandad.  I have my Granpa's old beat up Remington Model 12 that he bought new in 1920 or 21.  It was the first rifle I ever shot.  It spent 60+ years working on the farm and shows it's use and age, but I wouldn't part with it for anything.  You just can't replace those memories and heritage.

I'm looking forward to getting some pasties from Muldoon's near Munising.  Got to find a receipe and try making them myself sometime, but my skills are limited.

They do take a lot of work to make. That's why my mom only makes them a couple of times a year. I think the hard part is getting the dough right. My uncle up there just buys premade pie crusts and fills them with pastie ingredients. Not as good as the real thing but a lot easier to make.

I think I can get you a recipe if you want. The filling is pork, beef, onoin, potato and rutebega. I'll have to call her, she doesn't measure anything though.

I don"t know about the miners in da youpee, but the miners in the Wisconsin lead mines would peel off the crust and throw it away because they were not able to clean the lead and dirt off of their hands.  I would hate to have to do that because I think the crust is what makes it special.  The crust and the pork, beef, onion, potato and rutabaga...

They would hold it by the rolled thick crust part and discard that when they were finished.

real pasties are made with venison or bear meat!!! My wife makes a hell of a pastie. Personaly though i prefer a pastie pie. She makes both when she makes them. The pasties are more convient if im heading to camp or just want a quick meal but the pies end up more moist. She will also make some up with cheddar cheese in them. I like that alot too.

Wyoming is beautiful Flatgate!  But at least Michigan's U.P. has four seasons.  Let's see, there's June, July, August, and WINTER.  :)  I'm in Texas right now and it's warm today but pretty darn windy.  My neighbor told me he had his jack knife blow open in his pocket and cut himself!  44 Man
