I have had this happen when target shooting, using pellets. I have watched one go flaming downrange. This is why I will not use pellets while hunting.

Had that happen to me on a nice 8 pt at 75 yards.  I thought it was a chip shot!  Saw the bullet and a pellet go about 30 feet and a roman candle come spiraling out of the barrel, and a really wierd sci-fi sound.  My wife watched the whole thing from the other corner of the woods and called me and said "What the hell was that"!  Only thing I can think happened was that I had just filled a doe tag an hour before and didn't get the barrel dry from field swabbing.  I've never had a problem with loose in over 30 years, and promptly switched back.

What went wrong is the shelf life of those 777 pellets, somewhere they absorbed moisture and lost their power...

Go to Pyrodex R-S or better yet, Goex FFF loose powder...When stored in a cool dry space with the lid tight, they will last for years...

Most pellets have a different color or are beveled on one end. They are treated on that end to enhance burn( make it easier to ignite) . If you put them in backwards then the are harder ignite and burn slower but still can move the load out the bbl at a slower rate . Check instructions on the box .

The end of the pellet that goes toward the breach, is treated with a small amount of black powder to get it to ignite.

I don't think it matters with 777.  Pyrodex pellets do have some real black powder on one end of the pellet to enhance ignition I believe.

As to your original question I would guess either bad (i.e. damp or old) pellets or an undersized sabot.  I have an MDM inline that has a slightly oversized bore.  Any of the "EZ" load sabots just slide right down the barrel.  When I pull the trigger the gun goes "SHHHHOOOOMMMP!" with almost no recoil and I can see pellets, sabot and bullet flying out the barrel.

If you want to stick with pellets, get a fresh box and find a sabot that's a might tough to load in your gun.  You'll get a better seal, better ignition and better accuracy.

You are using shotgun primers ? The 777 pellets are for use with SG primers.

I believe you should use muzzle loader primers and not standard 209 shotgun primers with pellets.
From what I understand the 209 shotgun primers are too hot for pellets and they push the load out too fast resulting in incomplete burning.

montveil , 777 pellets are harder to ignite and the manf. states on their site that 777 is made to be used with shotgun primers . They make no mention of any other primer to be used . I would suggest they may be correct with regard to their product .

i use cci 209 primers  i tried the winchester and remmington clean burn  primers  made for muzzleloaders my gun didnt like them ass good so since i clean after every use  i just use regular 209 primers cheaper anyway and when i bought my gun years ago they didnt make primers for muzzleloaders. i killed a doe yesterday with my gun everything seems to be fine now even though my sabbots load super easy and they are not easy load sabbots they shoot great and do a great jod on the deer

Thanks for the input, I'll check the website.
I have used ML primers with 2 pellets and they never have failed me.
Time to consider re-evaluation

don't feel bad we shot 3 peletts of 777 for a couple years then found out by calling the factory that only 2 should be used . We called because a friends Knight was blowing alot of hot stuff back in his face. First thing the lady ask was are you using 3 peletts ? if so it will do that !

There is no top or bottom on a T7 pellet... just drop them in and shoot them.

Back when you thought you might have a wet bore, did you shoot a couple of primers before shooting a loaded ML?

Myself, I think it is important to clear the BP prior shooting and after cleaning... especially if you store the ML with the muzzle up...

Also, many guns allow you to shoot 3 - 50 grain pellets whether it be a T7, or Pyro pellet.  If you look at your manual the load max'es will be listed.

Even though Hodgdon maintains the line of 2 pellets because of liabilty in some guns, the manufactures set the standards for their guns.  Hodgdon is actually now making a Magnum Pellet that equals 60 grains of loose T7 powder so two pellets equal a 120 grains of T7 or 150 grains of real BP/Pyro.  Normal T7 pellets a loaded down to equal real BP/Pyro pressures.

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - they are a blast....

yes my gun is a magnum and shoots three pellets but shoots two more accurately i never fire primers thru the gun after i clean never felt the need but after cleaning last night i noticed my tc cleaning patches are wetter as i get near the bottom of the tub and i think thats what went wrong the solvent run down into my bp and when i  run a dry patch down it i didnt get all the way down to soak up the solvent and when i dropped in the pellets they got wet and didnt fire correct but in 10 years this was the first time i ever had any trouble with the pellets or the gun not firring correct

Yes I shot three myself and called the factory for a friend and the factory rep stated stated not to use 3 of 777 . I dropped back to 2 and notice little difference really in hunting . little less kick . I still use 3 pellets of other brands. Also 777 has magnum pellets that still only advise using 2 , it has to do with igniting them. I suggest you check it out for yourself  ;)

If you called Hodgdon for your information, you are correct they will only advise 2 pellets because of liability, or if you called CVA they might tell you the same thing as they often recommend 100 grains max.  Hodgdon has to take this stance because they have no idea what rifle you might be shooting the powder in so i would again indicate to you check your gun manual you might find something completely different as the manufacturer has tested their approved loads...  Any gun that is approved for 150 grains of pellets can shoot 3 pellets of T7 -

And you are correct about the the two Magnum pellets as they are not loaded down to BP pressures they are loaded as T7 and equal 60 grains of T7.  With two mag pellets you are shooting 120 grains of T7, which is equal to 150 grains of BP or Pyro.   On the other hand a regular 50 grain T7 pellet equals about 36 grains of loose T7 and about 50 grains of BP or Pyro.
