Hornady .44 cal 240 gr. hollow-point bullets
« on: November 04, 2010, 02:25:44 PM »
I bought a box of Hornady .44 cal 240 gr. hollow-point sabot bullets today and plan to check them out soon in my T/C Triumph muzzleloader. Am a bit concerned about their killing power on white-tails, considering that they'll expand upon impact. Any danger of losing a big buck because they don't penetrate far enough?

Nope, one of the "classic" inline bullets...Team it up with the green MMP or Harvester sabots and 80-100grs of Goex FFF or Pyrodex R-S and if you lose one, it won't be the bullets fault... :)

I will be using the same bullets/sabots in my Apex. I tried several others but these always grouped the best. I am going to try some 295 gr Powerbelts as well. I am using 100 gr of Triple pellets for the XTP's and the Triple 7 Magnums for the Powerbelts.
Looks like I'll only be shooting does as I already got my buck with a bow and in Indiana you can only shoot 1 buck per year but lots of does.

Keep your shots in under 150 and you'll be amazed.  Don't plan on eating much of the offside shoulder.....

i have never recovered a hornady .45 caliber XTP hollowpoint from a whitetail. 100gr of 777 or appropriate powder has given me entry/exit from end to end on over 50 BP deer. the XTP is a wonderfully built bullet.

I have gone to the SST's a few years ago. So I could shoot flatter at long distance. But I used xtp's and they plain work. I used 180gr and 240 and they will take down any deer you shoot. You put the shot where it needs to be and they won't go far!!!

I shot the Hornady XTPs with 90 gr. of Blackhorn 209 powder yesterday @ 95 yds. and got a nice 2" group. Very happy with this accuracy, so plan to stick with this load. Also pleased at how clean my bore is now, using Hoppe's #9 solvent. Blackhorn powder is MUCH cleaner than 777. The saboted XTPs are quite difficult to load, however, and I'm not sure how they'd do if I loaded them in the field without cleaning the bore after my first shot. Any suggestions?

Beagleboy...I started muzzleloading over 30 years ago...One thing I learned years ago, make the 1st shot count, don't worry about the 2nd...I always take time to wipe the barrel with a couple of damp patches before shooting again...

You'll see posts from time to time on fellows getting a ball or bullet stuck down a barrel...It's usually because they tried to reload without a quick cleaning...I've also noticed that a clean barrel usually groups better than a dirty one...Enjoy...

If your shooting the Blackhorn 209 Powder You shouldn't have any problem reloading many times without swabbing or cleaning the bore. I shoot 120 grains of blackhorn in my encore and have no problems with reloading or accuracy after multiple shots without any swabbing or cleaning. Just clean with Hoppes #9 when ready to clean and your good to go. Now if you are shooting triple 7 or pyrodex that is a different story all together. With triple seven that darn crud ring is enough to make a grown man cry. A swabbing with windex or alcohol is a must before a second shot. I would go smokeless before I went back to triple 7. Of course all of this is my opinion and my opinion only your mileage may vary!

I had to beat those sabots down the barrel of my Knight Disc XT.  Switched to Harvester Crush Rib sabots.  Shoot really great and load a lot easier.  You can get the sabots and bullets seperately in bulk for A LOT cheaper than buying XTP packages, too.

Never shot a 240 grainer through a deer but I have with the 300 grain version....you won't have any problems.

The 240 xtp's will kill deer just fine.

I have a great story for the .44 cal 240 grain Hornady. I used conicals and open sights, until a stand I had over an open marsh and I kept seeing deer way past my range. I mounted a scope on my gun (NEF) and bought the Hornady .44/240. I tried heavy loads and got big groups. I backed it down to 90 grains of pyrodex and it was incredible accurate. Last year I'm in the stand when I hear crunching out in the marsh and see antlers making it through the marsh grass. The deer made it by the last tree I laser ranged (130yds,) and the buck put his front legs onto a fallen tree and elevated himself above the grass. I held alittle high and touched it off. Bang flop. My neighbor came out to help me. 180lb buck, the bullet entered through the ribs left side, put a soda can hole through the heart, broke the right shoulder and was found just under the skin on the opposite side. I still have the bullet. My neighbor took a picture of the heart on his cell phone but I don't have it or I'd post it. Great round. 150 & 120 grains of powder = large groups, 100 grains was ok, 90 grains (3 thirty grain pellets,) was awesome.  Good luck.
