$11 Million Dollar Lottery win given away
« on: November 05, 2010, 08:21:06 AM »
A retired 78 year old Nova Scotian steel welder and his wife have given away their $11 million  lottery winnings.  The woman who is recovering from cancer said,  "What you've never had, you never miss."  "We have an old house, but we're comfortable and happy in it."  She also said giving the money away, "made us feel good."  The money was given to the local fire dept., churches, cemetaries, the Red Cross, the Salvation Army, 2 hospitals, and organizations fighting cancer, Alzheimer's, and diabetes.  They drive a 13 yr. old car, have no microwave, and no voicemail.  They are amazing people.

Indeed.  I respect their decision, but honestly: it would have been a wiser move to keep $1 million of it and give the REST of it away.  You were lucky.  You might not need ALL that money but at least get a little something out of it. At a minimum, at his age, $1 million would carry them comfortably for the rest of their lives.  Take the time they have left to enjoy life. Oh well.  I don't fault their decision, just think might have been happier to keep a little of it.

I very much respect their decision - given their age and station in life, this money could well have caused more problems than it would solve.

I would not give away $11mil - my goal would be to have a more substantial long term impact by having the economic position to influence local politics and create jobs.
