Winter Head gear line up.(Arctic Coast Alaska)
« on: November 08, 2010, 08:05:10 AM »
As Im heading into another winter Im looking at my winter head gear, like guns you cant have any one that does all jobs really well, for blowing snow/blizzard its useally my highly modified musher hat & goggles, -for really cold temps of -20 to -50 its the ole quilted beaver hat hand made by one our local eskimo ladies.
the Bad Boyz turtle skin beenie is a good general use hat.

Winter Hats in the land of high winds

I modify my hats for the high winds
The beaver hat had tie strings with pretty braided yarn and beaver tuft ends, they dont do well in high coastal winds, found at anything over 20mph its better to cut off the strings and use Hook and loop fasteners (Velcro) and dont spare the size (bigger is better) I use a 3"x5" patches even on the musher cap
those little 1/2"x1" velcrow fasteners are totally inadiquate a couple gusta and your chaseing your tumbling cap across hard pack wind swept snow, if you do catch it, it will be all loaded up with dust snow in the sheerling lining.
I had one musher hat ripped off my head and went sailing out onto glare ice and blown for 600 yards before it stopped temporarly  during a lull in the gusts trapped in some finger drifts. its dangeriouse trying to chase down your protective head gear in -78 to -120F windchill let alone the slip hazzard involved in trapping wayward head gear.

Kids thought Daddy would look great styleing a Andyian beanie's, wore it out round town a little, It didnt stop the arctic wind, it sliced right through like panty hose, ended up burning both ear lobes pretty good, so I use it only when out round towm with the kids, I wouldent like it past the town limits, damn thing could be disaster to wear when you need the proper equipment, best to stick with what works, Quilted Beaver Hat.
