1987 ford fuel ?

I have the 87 ford pickup that has the low pressure pumps in the tank and the high pressure pump mounted to the frame my question there is a canister right behind the high pressure pump that screws off is there supposed to be some kind if filter in it i cant find in any of my books.The top side has a tube of some sort it has me puzzled to what it might be thanks for any help.

The filter on my Bronco II was mounted to the frame rail pretty much under the seat. it is a big ol rascal, and as i recall it screwed on one end and the other took a tool much like an A/C quick coupler thingy to remove. Go to NAPA and ask to see a fuel filter for your truck, then compare the two.
