pretty sure. the added "R" stands for Rimmed.

The difference between people who do stuff and people who don't do stuff is that the people who do stuff do stuff.

Yep. As a side note the Finns designate the same cartridge as 7.62x53. As stated the "R" should be added for proper identification of the cartridge. Example: 7.62 x 51 = .308 win
                                                                    7.62 x 51R = .30-30 win

 Just make sure that you know if a cartridge is rimmed or not. If you are shooting a Mosin nagant ,yes you need 7.62x54R.

That's a new one to me.  I've never heard the .30-30 designated that way.

Just some food for ammo thoughts;

Go to; www.gunboards.com and go into the mosin nagant section and them go to the 7,62x54r ammo section. There's lots of info on mosin ammo. Bullet diameter and the finnish "D" stamped barrels.  You may want to read all the stuff there about the mosins too. I'm not sure about the mosin bore diameters of the 7,62x54 but the 7,62x39 diameters can run between .308", .310", .311" to .3115" to .312".  I have even mic'd some 7,62x39 bullets to be out of round a .0005" and that can cause the fliers we see often. I'm not sure how the bores on the mosin barrels run size wise yet. Some say .308" to .310" but we have to check the bore diameter anyway.

7.62x51R is actually the european designation for the .30-30 ( metric).  I use it as a qualifier to the  addage of "if you don't know".......

Funny you should mention this.
Here is the .30-30 (7.62x51R)
loaded with 147 grain ball. I aquired a bunch
of these projectiles a few years back and loaded
several in the old winchester cartridge cases.
They are quite accurate.

ill bet those would shoot quite nice out of my savage 340 bolt.if the mag would work with a cartridge that long.

It don't.
