My new Optima range report
« on: November 09, 2010, 05:44:47 AM »
Got out to the 50 yd range this morning and all I can say is that CVA nailed it with this one!  Started out with 80gr Pyro RS and 250gr SW Superglides.  Boresighted last week.  The first shot was 2 1/2" low and 2" left.  Second shot overlapped first by 1/2.  Had to walk to the target to see where it hit.  I wasn't even sure I hit the board at that point.  I thought OK, lets see what this thing can do.  The third shot overlapped the first two!  1/2" group at 50 with the first 3 out of the box!  Made my scope adjustments and fired one more.  Bullet diameter to the left and dead on up.  Then I upped the powder to 100gr.  1 1/2" high and a three shot 1" group.  Hope to get to try a couple of other bullets before the season, but if not, she's ready to go!  I was concerned about recoil, but it handled it very nicely.  I ain't afraid to shot 120gr loose out of it if I can find a bullet/sabot that will print well.  After seven shots, there was NO residue inside the breech!  Trigger pull was nice and crisp and actually suprised me on the first shot.  Breech plug removed easily and was by far the easiest clean up I have ever done!  Awesome rifle, and awesome price.  Got this one from Cabela's for $250 to my door with the free "XHOLIDAY" shipping special.  If you hurry, you can still get it I think.  A special thanks to Bigblock for all his repoting on this rifle, too!  At this point, all I can say is WOW!

Got in some 100 yd range time yesterday and found a few more loads...

She like's 250gr Parker Jacketed Hydra-Cons at 100gr Pyro.  Same point of impact as the 250SW's, just under 1" groups.

She doesn't like 275gr Parkers with a 3" 5 shot group.  Maybe slowing the bullet down would help.  I ended up with a 12 pak by mistake and thought I'd give them a try.  Not interested in persuing this combo at this time!

She like's 240gr XTP's with Harvester crush rib sabots at 100 gr as well.  5 shot group at 1 1/4".

After 21 shots thru this rifle, I'm ready to go get some venison!  Will use the Parker's as they reliably expand at hunting ranges.  Not a big fan of SW's any more (due to possible expansion issues), but they will surely be my back up!  I can say now that this rifle is only ever so slightly (if at all) less accurate than my Knight Disc XT, and that could have been due to a perfectly nasty day at the range.

I am still AMAZED at how clean this rifle shoots!  After 15 shots, I could have gotten away with not even cleaning the breech plug.  CVA should market this as the worlds cleanest breechplug, as well as the easiest to remove.

I give this rifle a 10....

My first two shots with my cva optima were touching I have only had time for 5 shots in total and have it closer to zero. I have a bunch of lead 44 rounds in three different weights (200, 240 and 250) that I am going to try and zero in using hornaday 44 sabots.
