Not enough difference in the two to say one is too much and the other OK. Recoil is pretty much the same.

Question:

What will you be hunting?

How old are you?

I started with a .270 when I was 17 and never had a problem with it. The two cal's are so similar there is little practical difference.  .270 ammo, however, is more plentiful and probably more economical than 7-08.

I think you'll be fine with either.

For a new hunter/shooter, I would recommend taking a look at a Weatherby Vanguard in .270 Win.  As others have noted there is not much difference in recoil between a 7mm-08 and a .270 Win, especially if you compare a lightweight 20" barrel 7-08 to a 24" sporter weight .270 Win.  I have owned and reloaded for both, and would go for the .270 win.  When I started over in shooting after a 5 year hiatus, (hence my handle, 2ndtimer) I bought what I thought would be my one do it all rifle: a Winchester Model 70 Super Shadow in .270 WSM.  I can load it down to 7mm-08 level 130 gr bullet at 2800 fps), or up to approach a 7 mm Remington Magnum (150 gr bullet at 3100 fps+).  But when I started up again, I was returning with over 20 years of shooting and handloading experience.  If I was starting out with no experience, I would go for the .270 Win for deer and elk.  If I had no plans to hunt anything bigger than deer and also wanted to shoot varmints, I would also consider the .243 Win for a first rifle.  It has much milder recoil than either the .270 Win or the 7mm-08.  Ammo cost is much less for the .270 or .243 vs the 7mm-08.  Also ammo is much easier to find for the .270 or .243.

my 10 year old boy shoots a Howa 1500 7mm-08 better than most adults.

personally, i would pick it any day over a .270. my reasoning, if you are going to shoot a long action go big. .30 or above.

i consider 7mm-08 and .308 to be ideal hunting calibers to fit nice rifles.

IN as much as the .308 has less recoil than the 30-06, it follows that the 7mm-08 would have less recoil than the .270.  The 7-08 is really cool and the Weatherby Vanguard has a 24" barrel.

I have a Weatherby Mark V Sporter in 7mm-08 Remington.  The Mark V action is the same used for my Mark V Ultra Lightweight in 338-06 A-Square it just uses a different magazine. I found mine for very inexpensive off gunbroker.com has a 24” barrel and the Mark V has the 54 degree bolt lift which I love a lot.
