A couple years ago I picked up a 7.5 french mas 49/56.with a couple ten round mags. I really like it alot.

I've never seen any and I would kind of doubt there would be a market for them since the number of these rifles which were produced was relatively small and spare magazines came with most of them in the surplus market.

I've never seen anything larger than the 10 round factory standard mag for them either.

I have been looking for a 20 or 30rd mag too for my 49/56's but I have never seen one yet.  I read somewhere there are larger mags for it.  The little 49/56 French Commando Rifle in either 7.5 french or 308win. is a hoot to shoot too. Its small like an sks just more powerful and it handles the same too.                                                      BigBill

The french were the first ones to develop the semi-auto rifle back in the twenties.

Jack thats a great site for information on the 49/56 in 308 he lists a gunsmith that does repairs and builds these in 308(change over) the guy adds a gas valve and can also rework the mag well to accept FAL mags too.  I've been thinking of sending him my M49 and change it over to 308. Is there reloadable ammo available for the 7.5 MAS 36?  I heard that there was an adapter available to allow shooting 7.62x39 ammo in the MAS.  Does anyone know anything about them?

I've read on other boards that someone who was doing the conversions had stopped doing them so you should check before making any plans. Also, I believe that one of these gunsmiths stopped adding a valve and was adding somekind of chamber instead.

Jack/guys; I only shoot the 7.5F thats made in Portugal FNM its available from SOG  $8.95 a box.  Its such a fun gun to shoot so thats why I bought my 49/56 in 308 because its cheaper to shoot.  The gunsmith mentioned in the "jpfo" site sounds very good he's the first one to put an adjustable gas valve in the 49/56 because of the difference in breech pressure between the 7.5 and 308 ammo.  Century arms did ok after a while they got better at it.  I heard that Century farms some gunsmith work out to vendors so who knows who built the gun?  My first 49/56 came from SOG it was unissued/rearsenaled that had to be the best military buy I have ever seen so far I tried to get more but they ran out but I did get one more(which I never shot).  I have come across a few of these SOG guns so far their still around $300.  Now as far as the linked ammo its machine gun ammo it maybe more powerful I know ther lebel stuff was and shouldn't be used in the lebel guns so I'm afraid of using the linked stuff.  Maybe someone will explain who knows for sure.  At first some of the SOG guns didn't cycle because the new FNM ammo was wimpy loaded not enough powder with the first batch of ammo my new 49/56 cycled great but my old 49 didn't they say the second batch of ammo is ok everything works now.  So if you get some of this older new FNM ammo maybe the ammo not the gun if it doesn't cycle.  I wish we had another source of new ammo for the 7.5F and  some of these other surplus military guns.  While our sport of collecting is growing as we speak so is the demand for all the old military calibers too.  Its an untapped market for the bullet makers??  Their actually sitting on a full oil well?                                                                 BigBill

Yeah, I've read that the old FNM MAS ammo wouldn't cycle well. This guy was asking about a MAS 36 though so I don't think he'll care.

I have seen a MAS with an "Extended" Mag!
as I understood it, there was some made from
some type of Medium Machine Gun magazines.
A little file work was all that was Necessary.
(Kinda' like a 30 round model 1913 mag. in a HAKIM)
"Probably Not Legal to Do that now though"
I'll bet the last Democraps in office Outlawed it !!!

The law states if the mag is modified to fit another gun it must still fit the orginal gun it was intended for.  Then and only then is it legal to do.  There is a 7.5MG mag but I'm not sure if it fits or can be made to fit the 49/56.                                                                  BigBill
