Short Rifle barrels?

Hey guys,
I'm a big fan of carbines and was thinking about picking up a 30-30 or 4570 to make a real compact rifle.... Youth stock set and 16.5 or 18" barrel. What do you recommend and do you have pictures of any?

I've already gone the 357 max route and would like to try something different

here's one in 45-70  Just spent 3 minutes posting the pic of a 45-70 target, not my shorty.  Can't find the pic, will try and get another one tomorrow. :P  Anyway, I really like my 45 cal shorty and it is fun to chop off a barrel and do the recrown yourself and wind up with a gun the shoots well.

Shorties seem to be very popular. I have a 20" encore in 357 Max and my mother has a 18" Handi in 357 Max. We wouldn't trade her rifle for nothin!!!  ;D ;) I'm still kicking the idea around of shortening my 22" 45LC Handi down to 18". I just paid to have it recrowned and shoulda done it then. :-\

Tim did my .38-55 barrel which is also an 18" twin to his.  Mine lives on a BC Carbine stock set as does my 16.5 inch .357 Maximum.  I've only got a few rounds through the .38-55, but she's looking like she's gonna be another shooter as her little sister is.  I'm seriously thinking of chopping my Handi .30-30 to 16.5 also.

Question for Dinny:  Where'd you get a .45LC 22 inch barrel?  I thought, probably incorrectly, they were all 20 inch.

I currently have three Handi shorties. All have a 18" bbl and a 13.25" LOP. They are chambered in 444Marlin,.45-'70,and 500S&W Mag.

Couple of thoughts about this. Velocity should be of NO concern. Eye relief should be,especially if installing a LimbSaver type of recoil pad. They are extremely mushy. The balance point(especially with the larger diameter bbls) changes quite a bit for the better. It brings it back very close to the hinge point.

The weight and especially the compactness changes for the better,much better !! The carry'ability is much better also. And,if the weapon is used for a truck gun they are super.

I agree with pruhdlr. When going to a shorter stock the shooter should be aware of the increased potential for " scope bite"!

I've got several:  500 Smith about 17 inch; 12 gauge house gun (cut back to 20 inches and right around an improved cylinder bore); and a (believe it or not) 243 bull cut back to 18 1/2 inches (this was for reduced turkey loads).  Darn turkeys are wearing me out.  About the only place I can find any anymore is in the thickest greenbriars and laurel thickets, and down the steepest slopes (goin down is ok, but comin back up hurts a little).  Since that is a thick barrel, I am thinking of having Wayne York make it another big bore.  Lets see, I have 500 smith, 50 alaskan, 45-70....any suggestions?

I just sent out a .357 max barrel to be cut at 16.5" and recrowned. I can't wait to get it back.  ;D

I find the Handi rifles are so short using the factory barrel you guys who have chopped them must be able to use them for concelled carry  ;D. Hunting in the thick stuff is where the handi shines and the lost velocity shouldn't make any bit of difference on 50 yard or less shots. My .17hmr handi with the youth stock won't even reach the barrel supports in my gun case and makes for one hell of a nice small game rifle, I have to sit it on top of a box of shotgun shells so it doesn't fall ovfer in the safe. Would love to try a .500 smith of 45-70 in the 18" range for a woods gun similar to those marlin lever guns minus the receiver. Wouldn't imagine there would be any game in the general area still sleeping after firing one of them off.

 ;D Very happy with my 18" .44Mag. It makes me wonder why the pistol calibers come with 22" barrels (except for .500 S&W, which sounds like it can use the weight for recoil reduction). You'd think the penny counters would jump on the chance to save 4" per unit. Does anyone prefer the 22" barrel in .357 or .44 ? Pete

Anybody ever tried a 350 Rem Mag conversion in a handi?  Basically get 35 Whelen ballistics out of a short barrel.  I know it is belted - wonder if that causes problems???

Look at the 444M, I just picked one up a couple of months ago and am very impressed by it.  Little flatter than the 45-70 but still shows up at the target with a nice heavy bullet.  Mine is a standard 22" barrel and I don't think I am going to chop it, but I think a 444M shorty wouldn't lose enough velocity to make that much difference.  Maybe I need two of them? A long and a short? ::)

BB Yeah, I am thinkin that would be a good one.  Another dandy brush gun.  Of course, I already have a few of those.  Maybe I should start carrying two shorties at once...If I can just figure out how to switch fast enough for quick follow-up!  ;D  They get envious sittin in the safe when one of the others leave - I just know they do.

A 16.5" 357 Herrett with youth stocks done by Andy (MSP Ret). It is about as short of a functional handi as you can get and in 357 Herrett because I like things that are different. I have a couple each of 357's and max's.. I got the reamer at a bargain and always liked to read Bob Milek in the 80's.

I had a buddy I'm hunting with stop by this morning to shoot and B.S. a little.  He shot my 16.5 inch Maxi with .38s and a red dot, and he was so tickled I thought he was going to wet his pants.  His comment was "Man, THIS is fun!!"

Not meaning to expose my ignorance, but what do you need a .458 Win Mag for here in the Lower 48?  My .45-70 will topple anything in North America and for that matter almost anything on earth.  It's a simple and efficient case to reload, and kills a broad spectrum of critters well with a wide range of loads.  You can shoot very long distance or close up, plinking or monster killers.  It's your choice.  In my opinion, it is THE ONE rifle to have.  But, the shooter has to do his part.  It's not a point blank shooter.  You can't take it out of the box, point it at a 400 yard target and whack it.  No, it's gotta be learned.  When you do, that long shot is meat in the freezer.

Well Petemi,  G-o-f had requested in his quote any suggestions!
I gave him one. Some people get a charge out of using big bore rifles for hunting game here in the lower 48.
Ever read any of Paul Mattews books? There you will find that he used the .458 Win Mag., .375 H&H Mag,
and the 45-70 all for deer hunting in Pennsylvania.
I also have a friend here in Colorado that has used both the .458 Win Mag and .375 H&H Mag on elk!
I personnaly have used the 30-06 and 375 H&H Mag on elk. I will stick with the .375 H&H for elk.

No you do not need to use these calibers here in the lower 48, but they will do a great job with the correct loads!

Streak, I cannot disagree with you.  Sure, it's done, and you can do it.  Yes, I have read his books, and have given them to several people, Tim included, Paul Mathews "40 Years With the .45-70".  I'm sorry, I didn't mean to get into a peeing match.....I just see no real use for belted magnums, besides self-gratification.  Two friends showed up here a couple of years ago.  One was dragging a Win. 300 mag behind him.  Wanted to know what was wrong with the rifle.  I shot it, my other buddy John shot it.  We made a couple of adjustments and it zeroed dead center inside a quarter.  The simple fact is Aaron was afraid of the thing.  After it was dialed in, he still couldn't hit anything with it.  The boy needs to take his deer at night with a .22 Hornet, or stay home.

I guess the other thing is I never considered the .45-70 to be anything less than a bigbore.  "Magnum" does not mean "Big bore"  H&R was proposing to bring out the .300 Wins and 7mm mags last year.  I'm glad they didn't come out....I have absolutely no reason to own one, and had  one on order.

I do.  The 5.75" leftover makes for a great paperweight and conversion piece.
