powder for 270win

I have another powder question about power but this time for the 270win.   it is the standard 22" barrel.   i recently was using the varget with pretty good results.  last year i tried the imr4350 but i had just started loading so i didnt put much on those results.   i was going to get the varget but once again the local shop didnt have any.   i was going to drive an hour away to get some varget but anyone has any suggestions i am willing to try a different powder or the 4350 again, either way i have to get more.  i almost forgot i am shooting the sierra 130 pro hunters and i also have a full box of hornady 150grain interlock softpoints  so any suggestion a good powder for both would be great.  thanks everyone for sharing all their knowledge with my other posts.

My first reaction was 4350 or 4831. If the 4350 worked i'd stick with it.

i never actually kept track of the 4350 i was pretty much just putting holes in the paper and trying to break the barrel in with it.  the 4350 is all used up on the swede.  the varget was pretty good.  that was putting 7 out of out of 11 in the size the top of a coke can at 100yrds.   good enough for hunting but i am sure like everyone else on here  wanting to do better and show others what a $250 gun can do.

My favorite all time load is 53.4 grains of H4350 and with the sierra 130 they hold right under an inch.
Many of my friends like this recipe. I use a rem 9 1/2 primer. The IMR & H will vary so please look the data up before you load. But this is what I use for any 130 gr in the .270's at our house.  Good luck!  thejanitor

H4831 has always been the classic powder used in the 270. Pretty hard to go wrong with that. Use a magnum primer. I recently purchased a 270 barrel from Garbhead. That's the powder I will start with. I also have some IMR7828SSC that I plan to experiment with.

Jack O'Conners load was 49.5 grains of 4064. It has been the most accurate load in several 270s that I have owned. I think that even in the day it was too hot according to most manuals. Today's manuals written with lawyers looking on probably don't even come close.

My preference is IMR 4831 for the 270 Win.

My favorite so far is 58.5gr of H4831SC with a 130gr Sierra Prohunter and CCI lr primer. 3/4 to 1" @ 100yds out of my Rem. 700 22" barrel. My main brass supply is Fed. but using Rem. and Win. shoots all the same. with a . I'm getting 2924 fps with that load.
    A close second is 54gr of H4350 under a 130gr Hornady interlock, same brass and primer. That one gives 2960fps, but is a 1- 1 1/2" load. They both shoot to the same point of impact, which is nice. Aside from a smaller group, I also favored the H4831SC load because my rifle shot 58-59GR to the same point of impact, so settling on the mid-point assures me my groups won"t suffer if I'm off a little on the scale.

A couple other powders that I have found to work well in the 270 win are Re17 and Ramshots Hunter , both work very well , however I still like IMR4350 the best .

I had a custom 270 back in the 1960`s. The only powder it liked was H-4831. Back then I was giveing $ 1 a lb. for it.  Primers $ .75 a hundred, bullets $ 2.95 a hundred. And I was a young guy instead of a wore out old man.

1 grain under max for your bullet weight with H4831..works just as well with my 6.5 Remmy Mag.

I started out 20yrs ago with imr4350 and never had a reason to change, my load is cci 200,54.6gr.imr4350,and any 130gr.bullet satisfies me.

I have loaded for the 270 since the early 60s and always shot 130grn. bullets with 60grns. of 4831, about 3100 fps. Used it in several rifles.

 For me THE powder for the 270 is IMR4831. BUT there are many other good powders avalible. Try a few and find what your barrel likes, what WE like makes no difference at all. Let your barrel tell you what it likes.

After much shooting, I dedicate powders to calibers, 4350 for the '06, 4320 for the '08, H380 for the 22-250, 4064 for the 8MM, 4350 for the 243, AA1680 in the Maximum, 4227 in the 357 Herrett, H322 in the 223, RL15 in the 35 Whelen, WW748 in the 30-30, RL7 in the 375win, 3031 in the 38-55, 4198 in the 45-70 ETC.
YES I load for them all, (Plus some more!!) been doing so for over thirty years now.

Work up to it but the classic load for the 270 win with 130 gr bullets is 60 grs H-4831 for around 3100 to 3200 fps depending on the barrel. I have used this load for a number of 270 and it has always been accurate and with 130 Sierra bullets will hammer deer.

I won't go into a long story but in 1969 I met Jack O while hunting coues deer in So Az. he gave me a box of ammo for my future 270 that he informed I was going to by which I did a pre war md 70.

I pulled a bullet about 12 years ago because of a discussion on another board his load was 60.2 grs of surplus H-4831> 130gr Win Silver tip bullet and a WW case.

I load WMR or H-4831 both at max W/Rem 9.5 primer and Win case 3077fps with WMR and 3109 with H-4831 behind a 130gr Nosler Part or a WW power point

IMHO the standard for 270 to this day 130gr bullets H-4831.
