358 Winchester MGM barrel
« on: November 09, 2010, 04:44:11 PM »
I just got another MGM barrel. If it is half as good as my MGM 357 Max barrel, it will be a definite keeper. Anyone have any experience with the 358 Win? Is 22" a optimal barrel length?

Thanks, Dinny

The .358 Win is one of my FAVORITE rounds. Owned a Ruger 77R in .358 Win and hunted and killed deer with it for 12 years. If you shoot your .358 I think you will soon decide something 'bigger' [.350 Rem Mag or .35 Whelen] is not at all necessary! Your .358 will spit 200, 225, and 250 grain bullets out as fast, and with as much recoil as you will want!
There is not much 'sonic CRACK' out of a large .35 caliber bore, either. Nice if you don't wear hearing protection with deer rifles for that 'one shot' [of course hearing damage is still possible].
The report is not quite like a 270 for instance [hunting with many different cartridges for many years].
Yeah! Another .358 Win fan!

I have a Ruger 77 Hawkeye in 358Win.  Bought it after last hunting season and have it prepped for this season.  I'm kicking out 200gr Hornadys at 2600fps.  Recoil is very manageable and the cartridge seems plenty accurate.  Playing with Maximum Point Blank Range calculators, I determined that my current load is good to 297 yds from a single setting.  My range experience is accurate to the calculations.  From the research I did before engulfing myself in this cult cartridge, 22" is plenty to get great downrange performance.

Thanks guys!  From the sounds of it, I will enjoy this new-to-me caliber.

Thanks, Dinny

I just shot a 178 lb buck with my .358 win (BLR, 20").  Yup, it worked just fine, not the bang/flop I expected but dead within 40 yds.  I was using a 200 gr FTX bullet at a chronied 2550 fps and shot the guy at 20 yds in the center of the shoulder slightly quartering toward me.  Broke the bone, shredded the heart to pieces and the spleen but did not exit.  That bullet is extremely accurate in my rifle but clearly not built for the velocity you can get with a .358 Win.  I wouldn't use it again for our big whitetails, although it might have been a different story if the deer was farther away.
Everything said here about it is true, a very nice caliber indeed.  One tidbit of advice I've picked up reloading for it is to either stay away from headstamped Winchester brass or use it exclusively.  Maybe luck of the draw but both bags I got required much different loads than the .308 RP and Fed brass that I made.  I reload many calibers and this is by far shows the biggest variation I've ever seen and the headstamped .358 brass has the shortest life of anything I've ever used.  I made a sizing plug by chucking the Lee plug in a drill and putting a nice taper on it and polishing.  No problem necking up .308 brass...
Have fun.

Thanks for the info. I just bought a box of 200gr FTX bullets. Afterwards I emailed Hornady about optimal velocity. Being that is was intended for the 35 Rem, they suggested a top velocity of 2500fps. As you know, that's not fast for a 200gr bullets. I'll watch my brass.

Thanks, Dinny
