opening day primitive weapons
« on: November 09, 2010, 05:53:35 PM »
Here in Ms. We have a special primitive weapons hunt this year. It opened yesterday, I was in my tree stand by 6:30 & loading my atv with a nice doe ( Doe only hunt ) by 7:30. 80yds. H&R Handi in 45-70 with Hornady 325gr. leverevolution ammo. (DRT) 4 last year with this rifle,  this is my first deer this year. I went this evening with my cousin and he bagged another nice doe using another H&R 45-70, same ammo as well.  He ran about twenty yards before giving up, we just got through eating a mess of backstrap, what a day.  I cant say enough about these handies in 45-70, I dont see that they recoil as badly as some people proclaim.  They're a little rough with Hornady 325's on the bench, but very managable when hunting.

Good hunting & better eating!  Sounds like a very good opener.

It seems that a gun on the bench that really kicks somehow looses it's recoil when hunting.  Also it seems that a gun makes a lot less noise when shot at a deer as opposed to a paper target.  Maybe when your mind is really focused on the quarry you tend to block out the other inputs.

I've got to agree with you, Tom.  When hunting, I seldom even know the gun went off with the same load that knocked the crap out of me off the bench.  That's the greatest reason I believe that felt recoil is mostly in your head....you're expecting it.  When hunting, it's not on your mind at all.

What part of MS you hunting in, I am hoping to get out this week with the .44 mag in Holmes county. That crazy thing called work keeps getting in the way of my hunting.
