On this day ,
I echo above sentiments. I thank all who have served.
I was recently asked by my sisters son who my favorite superhero was.
This was an opportunity for me to pull out my Grandfathers photo album (his great grandfather) and share him the
contributions and sacrifice made from those who came before us and explained to him my true superhero was my grandfather and all the American soldiers.
I showed him the military photos of his great grandfather and his fellow soldiers, his Big red 1 Patch , His Bronze star , Purple Heart, campaign ribbons, and Dog tags. I explained to him how his great grandfather was a Blue Spader attached to 1st division, 26th infantry regiment, 1st Battallion. How they were part of the first amphibious assault on N. Africa, How Fought Rommel through the Kasserine pass in 1941 -1942, then fought their way through Sicily facing Herman Goering Tank Division till 1942-43. How after Sicily in 1943 they returned to England and were part of the first day, d-day assault on Omaha beach in 1944 how they fought their way through France, the battle of the Bulge, Ramagan and were the first infantry regiment to enter Germany.
And then I explained how these brave young men did all this and gave so much so we all could be free and that was why they were my real superheros.
Later that day if he asked if he could look at my superheros photo album again. Of course the answer was yes.
My hope is it made a lasting impression on him so some day when his son asks who his superheros are , he will reach for this album and teach that next generation who our countries true superheros are so our sons of sons never ever forget their sacrifice.
